All the schools I’m applying to require the writing test but when I’m retaking just to improve on math, reading, and science, is it necessary to take the writing again? Would it even hurt?
I’m aiming for a 32+ the second time around. Is this realistic if I prepare one month in advance? I also know that my writing isn’t factored into the composite score so I don’t see the point of taking writing again.
If you submit both ACT scores, then no, you don’t have to retake the writing. The school just need to have one on record. Most people do improve their score with second testing, so it is definitely possible to improve on a 30, BUT 30 is pretty darn good. Congrats!
My son has taken it twice with writing, and has not brought up his writing score even with prep (has a good composite score though). He has some dysgraphia and I just don’t see him going up much more with the writing score (luckily his English score is strong). He’s a much better writer if he can type, and if he has some time. I’m going to have him take it one more time in September with no writing, and try to go up another point or two in the composite score.
Unless a particular institution requires all the scores, we will send one of the ACT’s with writing test, and then the one in September without (assuming he goes up).
Maybe our approach has some holes in it but it’s what we’re doing.
If I do take writing again and do worse, will it affect me negatively or will they just ignore the worse writing score and superscore? Does this depend on college at well or is it “almost all” colleges.
You do not need to take the writing section again. As sated above, just submit the 30 composite with the writing and an additional set of scores (if they are better).
The ACT Writing section will be changing for the September test. So keep that in mind as you decide what to do.
@HereToHelpYou I took my first ACT and got a 29 C with a 29 in E and an 11/12 on the essay so a 30 E+W. I already signed up to take the ACT with writing. Do you think I should change that or should I just remain the same.
