How do you care for it in college? I'm going hopefully in fall of 2013 to a university and want to live on campus but I have curly frizzy hair that does stay down so I flat iron a lot and now my natural curls are damaged the ends don't curl anymore..I want to stop b\c it'll be easier plus it'll save time & money..its not long enough for me to braid it curly its shoulder length when straightened and grows slow..I also don't want to look like a hobo in college so how do I make it look nice my natural curls besides putting it in a ponytail and bun..Also do they have a limit for long you use the shower b\c it takes a while since my hair is thick and I leave the conditioner in for a while.

I used to straighten my hair in middle school and have since let it be natural. It takes a while (depending on your hair) for it to adjust to being curly/wavy, so start letting it be natural in the summer or something because it might look slightly awkward for a while. I would also suggest working in deep conditioning treatments to you hair routine at least once a week and use leave-in conditioner every day. Another thing you can do is rinse your hair with cold water as the last thing you do in the shower. This closes the hair shaft and seals the cuticle, making your hair more smooth and shiny. Other than what I just told you, no one can really tell you how to deal with your own hair (especially curly hair) because everyone is different. You just need to start experimenting with it. I’ve finally got it down my freshman year in college and it looks so good that everyone recognizes me by my hair haha.

A good thing to try is to stop washing it. Period. I know it sounds weird, but for girls with crazy curly hair, it’s frequently the best option.

You can also try the “plopping method”. It sound stupid but google it . There are whole websites devoted to caring for curly hair.

Thanks…ya I know I try to wash it once a week or a week and a half…I colored it again so I probably should stop straightening but I won’t until It gets longer

I have curly hair too and what I do sometimes is twist my hair up at night when its wet and then sleep on it so when I get up its not frizzy and it still looks pretty natural. There are all kinds of tutorials for this kind of hair style on YouTube, you just have to look for the good ones. I’ve heard that steam curlers work really well but I’ve never tried them so maybe you could look into those too.

As far as your ends go, you should probably get a trim. It will make your hair look ten times healthier. You might also want to use a leave in conditioner or a split end conditioner. I use Herbal Essences Leave in Protector (the red one). I also use Pantene Curly Mousse and the Pantene Curly Spray Gel. This line is specifically for curly hair and I think it works great. I use this shampoo and conditioner as well. My other favorite hair product is the Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly Spray Gel. I use it almost everyday. I’ve tried a million hair products and those are the ones that work best for me but you really have to try different products out for yourself. Same with hairstyles. Figure out which ones you like and dont be afraid to try lots of new ones.

I used to straighten my hair everyday but then I stopped because my hair was getting fried and now I love my curly hair and dont even wanna straighten it! So good luck to you! I’m sure you’ll find a good way to tame your mane too :)

Check out naturallycurly.com and/or curlynikki.com. Both websites have good information for people with all types of curly hair. And like the other people said, YouTube is your best friend.

UPDATE: I didn’t end up going to a uni so I live at home and commute to a community college. And surprisingly I barely flat iron by hair. I don’t feel the pressure to like in high school!

Sweet! I stopped chemically straightening my naturally kinky-curly hair last year and haven’t looked back. I love the curly look. But there’s something about college that makes you not care as much.
