I recently received a letter to do undergraduate research with a group not affiliated with my university. It starts in the fall but will spill over to the spring if they like me enough or if my findings somehow needs to extend into the spring semester.

So my question is: If I take a year off with the intention of returning, will I have to start paying off loans if I am not a student during that year?

Well every school is different in their handling of financial aid, so it would be best to contact the financial aid office and see what your options are. Also there maybe a “class” within your college that you can register that will keep you on as a full time student while you are away on a co-op or internship experience.

viciouspoultry is right. you should contact your FA office. In my experience, I didnt have to. I took a year off too. You’re still technically enrolled in a school, which means that you’re still a student and thus wont have to pay them back until you actually graduate.
