If you take an ap class, do you have to take the ap exam?

I am taking ap calculus ab right now, and was thinking of taking ap calculus bc next year. My friend is telling me to take the ap calc ab exam this year, even though I'm probably taking the ap calculus bc exam next year, which includes the calc ab subscore. my friend told me that if you take an ap class, then colleges are expecting you to take the ap test.

however, I do not want to waste around $90 on the calc ab exam since it's score will be already included in the calc bc exam. Do colleges really care that much whether or not you took an ap exam for each of your ap class?

Colleges don’t really care that much. AP exams aren’t much a factor of your college admission.

Your school will have its own policy. At my old school, to receive anything but an F in the class, you had to take the AP exam - and pay for it. My new school doesn’t care.
