which college do you apply to? Mellon College of Science or Computer Science?

You can apply to both. Just be sure to talk about your interest in double majoring in your essay.

Thank you, do I submit two applications or is there a place where I can mark both colleges

On the Common App Supplement for CMU you just mark both colleges. You do not need submit multiple applications.

You don’t need to be admitted to both schools to double major down the road, though I don’t see any reason why you wouldn’t want to apply to both.

Also, your intent to double major does not need to be noted in the essay if you feel that your writing style would be better suited to punch out “this is why I want MCS & this is why I want SCS” separately.

You absolutely should be clear in your essay on why you have applied to both schools-- so yes, the intent to double major should be highlighted in the essay-- otherwise, it will be unclear why two boxes are checked off.
Besides, MCS is a more safe bet than SCS – so the essay should be clear on math interests somewhere.

"it will be unclear why two boxes are checked off.'

Well, I applied to CIT and TSB with no intent to double major and got into both. If a “one or the other” path is the choice it shouldn’t be an issue to write essentially a paragraph or two for each. Just putting it out there for students interested in multiple programs, it won’t show indecision.

You don’t have to say you’re going to double major…but at least a good part of the essay needs to answer the question- so if there’s no info on math, then why would MCS accept someone?

Definitely apply to both, but if you get accepted to both then definitely choose SCS as the gen ed requirements are less restrictive.

Also, your allowed to apply to up to 5 cmu colleges and some are a lot easier to get into (such as H&SS). A little known fact is that although it can be quite hard to get into SCS or MCS, it is actually very easy to transfer into them midway through the school year if you are already in CMU. Also, double majoring is crazy easy as well, as you don’t need to be accepted to the other program to double major. There are no restrictions on the classes that you can take, so if you get into cmu as an H&SS major and just start taking CS classes you can get a CS degree without actually being accepted into the CS department. If you fulfill all the requirements you get a degree.
