If you're applying early decision to Amherst, can you apply early action elsewhere?

My son is applying early decision to Amherst and is also thinking of applying EA to Chicago. On Amherst’s website it says you are not allowed to apply ED to another place, and I understand it’s binding if he gets in. On the Chicago site, it says you are allowed to apply elsewhere and doesn’t mention the details (ED or EA). Any ideas?

My daughter's applying ED to Amherst as well. She cannot apply ED anywhere else. It is binding, if she gets in she has to pull all of her other apps.

BJM8, I think the question was about Early Action and not about ED. I guess you can apply, because you're entering a binding agreement with Amherst and a non-binding contract somewhere else. If you get accepted to Amherst, you should come here, irregardless of the EA decision, provided that financial circumstances allow you. If you do not, and get accepted into your Early Action school, you are free to go. I don't think you can apply Early Action Single Choice (favored by Ivys), however, because of you previously commiting to Amherst.

These are my top choices too!! I was also considering doing that, but then I decided against it because I think I might actually be more interested in Uchicago. They’re both such amazing colleges, I would be so happy with either one. Do you think these are reaches for your son or are his credentials pretty much in line with the stats of applicants at these schools? I’m very interested to hear more, since I am interested in these colleges and I thnk they would both be reaches for me. Could you please tell me more about your son, such as his grades, SAT scores, and those sort of things?
