If you're Asian...

im not entirely sure if above poster is serious or not…

do colleges require that we put our race on the appliaction?

Yes, you do. ^

It makes logical sense that your race decides your chances of getting into a college. The point of an education is to better inform society as a whole, not some elite race of people. All ethnicities whether african-american or hispanic, should have a fair chance in gaining a decent education to better future generations of these people.

We already know that Asians are inherently educated, so there’s no need to have one ethnicity taking over the U.S. More even playing field is a neccessity to keeping the American ideals.

"do colleges require that we put our race on the appliaction? "

No.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/772621-race-college-admissions-faq-discussion-5-a.html

eat an @ssload of kimchi, that stuff for you is like spinach for popeye.

The thing about Asians facing tougher chances to get into colleges is completely overrated. The whole thing has been overworked by a mountain of false/misleading facts and paranoia that it’s become just ridiculous. Somehow, it’s been coupled into the Affirmative Action debate, that the whole thing has become a jumbled mess. I see threads bordering on the idiotic, and the concept of the “stereotypical” Asian applicant, whatever that means, has become so ingrained in Asian high school students that they accept it as a given fact of life.

Don’t let people feed you that BS. You do not compete with other Asians for a limited number of spots, you do not face tougher chances for acceptance, and your “spot” is not being stolen by others.

It’s not just about the bloody scores! Yes, Asians face lower admission rates with similar scores but that’s because you haven’t looked at the other factors. I know people at Yale that are extraordinarily amazing. National synchronized swimmers, cancer survivors, people that can read ancient greek/latin at a level that they would have been fluent back then… etc. Many Asians tend to blame the system after things don’t go their way, but that’s because they only look at the process from only one perspective. Everyone applying has top scores and stats, that’s a given. But many that are whining don’t have much else than the standard CC laundry list BS. President of clubs, volunteering, some sports, decent scores at 97+ percentile. Rather than call it a “stereotypical Asian applicant” I call it the “stereotypical top school applicant”. And they, regardless of race or gender, have a tendency to get rejected. Yes, I know Affirmative Action exists, and I’m not going to debate whether it’s a good thing or not. People tend to argue virulently on the issue. However, I think it’s BS when people are blaming it for the “Asian” admit rate. It is statistically proven that Asians have the same admit rate as Whites should they factor in the recruited athletes and legacy considerations.

Do not get caught up in this issue. It is overblown to the point of lunacy. Do your best, and pursue the things that interest you. Every year this issue comes up on CC, it just seems that the responses are getting worse. Now people don’t even debate whether it’s true or not. Now it’s just “I’m Asian. That sucks to be me”.

Ooh… 2600 posts. I fail at life don’t I…? :)

^not when you got into yale =)

With Asians though, it depends what specific nationality you are…

I dont want to start a whole AA debate but the fact of the matter is - if ur chinese or korean, it’s harder

^ you also have to take into consideration how small Chinese Americans and Korean Americans’ population is and how most of them apply to elite universities.

Also remember the fact that the most (just a generalization) Chinese/Korean are shy and not very outgoing. The ECs they have are extremely similar. If they do a sport, its either cross-country or some non-contact sport. Then there are the volunteer clubs, hospital volunteering and piano. And of course there are also generic essays about how they come from a different culture.
The only thing they have it going is scores and marks, which isn’t good enough for elite schools.
And for the Asians who stand out in their communities, they DO get accepted.

How about amending that to “and for ANYONE who stands out in their communities, they DO get accepted”.

I’m not even going to comment on the gross “generality” you seem to have formed about certain Asian subgroups. I’m not going to comment on how you believe that “most Chinese and Koreans apply to elite universities”. I’m definitely NOT going to comment on your assumptions that “the only thing they have it going is scores and marks”.

Sigh… I don’t know what to say anymore. People start the blame the system game. Then their parents and peers reinforce it. Then it becomes fact. It’s now just a voracious swirl of pseudo-factual self actualized misunderstanding of the entire system.

^ok, now i feel dumb.

Forget everything i said in the previous thread. i’ve been reading way too many Chance threads.

As a matter of fact, i will write a school paper on this “voracious swirl of pseudo-factual self actualized misunderstanding of the entire system” -Gryffon do you mind putting that in simpler terms so i can paraphrase it better

I actually agree with Gryffon5147. Asians are not always shy and nerdy. (I would like to think that I am not. To some degree) I know plenty of “cool” Asians and they are outstanding. Compared to everyone. Sure I may be stereotypical myself to some degree, but I don’t let that get to me… do what you want to do and then try your best to get in the school you want.

If you don’t, heck it’s no big deal. There are thousands of colleges, you don’t have to go to Harvard.

I think Asians have created a negative stereotype of themselves.

He’s right people. There’s Berkeley as well.

I’m not sure what to think…I read Price for Admission…not a very bright look.

Yea, rounding up, its only about 0.34% harder - so don’t be worried ;)

I think people need to stop worrying about where they will go and more about what they will do and how they will do it. If I had a dime for every time I have seen an ivy league kid pwned out of school - id be rich. IF YOU HAVE THE TALENT YOU DON’T NEED A STUPID SCHOOL TO PROVE IT.

If I had a dime for every community college graduate who went on to become a global leader in their field, I would be poor as hell.

This is just stupid. i agree with Gryffon. I hate the collective asain whining. why not just apply to other schools like NYU, BU or stuff such as that. One doesn’t need to go to an ivy- save money by getting tons of $$$ at other colleges and apply to an ivy for grad.school
