If you're just back from the Johnson days at W&L

Tell us about your week. Was it mostly structured interview sessions? Were there social activities in the evenings? Where did you sleep (always a mom's concern :) )?

Thanks!

I had a great week. The student and faculty interviews were both 20 minutes, while the admissions interview was 30. The reason for the extra 10 minutes in the admissions interview was that 3-4 students were being interviewed at a time, rather than individually. I have heard many different experiences from the other finalists. For me, the interview sessions were based largely on what I wrote in my essays and what appeared on my activity sheet, as well as questions as to why I’m interested in W&L. Socially, we were left very much on our own, although we did pretty well. I got really lucky with sleeping…I was housed with a sophomore who dormed in one of the apartment-style living complexes, and one of her roommates moved out, so I got my own bed. However, most people were put up in freshman dorms.

Hope that helped!

I agree with everything above, and I also had a great time. The interviews were quite intense, but only totaled a little over one hour for the entire trip. Therefore, we were left with lots of time to explore the campus and otherwise. They scheduled student life panels for us and also lined up class visits, but we did have quite ample free time. At night, we were left mostly to hang out with one another or to go with our hosts. I ate one night at one of the frat houses, for example, and many Johnson scholars went out to the campus social events happening all around on Wednesday. I was in a freshman dorm and had a bed because my host’s roommate moved out. If there is anything else that anyone wants answered, I would be happy to oblige.

I am going for the overnight visit next week from thursday to saturday and was just wondering what you guys thought of the social scene there. Did u guys go to any of the parties? if so, how were they?

Thanks for the replies. Are you two definitely attending W&L, or is your decision contingent on the results of this week? Did the week affect your interest in W&L, good or bad?

James Blake: We were there over a Wednesday (one of the designated nights for partying), so there were options (all frat-related). A vast majority of the Johnsons (the name given to finalists) were at one party though. Due to problems in the years past (mostly last year with one kid going to the hospital), the school really seemed to have severely threatened the frats to keep everything fairly low-key. I really have no clue how it will be for you (the Friday that you’re there could be crazy) because I don’t know how many people will be doing what you’re doing. There were many of us, so special implications were made.

HighlandMom: The time spent at W&L definitely increased my interest significantly. However, I am not yet committed (and won’t be until all my RD results come back at least). I was accepted EA by Georgetown, and I am going there in two weeks to see how that is. Plus, I have applied to some of the famously-impossible schools, but I still will wait to see. Besides, I am not “officially” accepted to W&L yet anyway…

Thanks, pswib (trying to say your user name in my head gets me tongue-tied!). Keep us posted as your plans progress.

Glad to be of assistance. HighlandMom, do you have a child who will be competing for the Johnson Scholarship next year?

LOL that’s our hope  we visited in Sept. and it seemed like a great fit for her. She has some concerns (she’s not interesting in partying at all) but loved the LAC atmosphere and the mountains. We’ll be back in VA next week for dance and we’re looking at other colleges, so we’ll pop by W&L since we’ll be in the neighborhood. Then we’ll be back in Sept. also for dance, and she plans to interview then. Maybe we can meet some of you then! :)

Yes, it is a great place. Good luck with the application season! I wouldn’t mind going back to do all of the campus visits, but the paperwork was the killer.

Yep  I could do college visits full time. But there’s no pressure on me like there is on you students - I just get to live vicariously in the process. :)

My mom was the same way. I told her that she was able to enjoy the fun parts of the applications without doing any of the work.

Does anyone know when they will be notifying Johnson scholarship winners?

I have no idea, but it should be within the next two weeks for sure! At my admissions interview, the interviewer said that we should be hearing from them within two weeks. Since its already been one week, that would only leave one week left. But that could be completely off base.
I really hope I get the scholarship though!
Good luck :)

they say on the website soon after the competition and “certainly no later than April 1st”

What’s the difference between these 2. My D visited Wand L and was a little turned off by the “partying”, as it’s not really her style. It’s hard to believe that a school with stats as high as W and L is more into partying than any other schools. What are people’s opinions? Also, how does it stack up reputation and education wise with Williams?

That’s because it’s not. But that’s the tag it’s been given so people tend to zero in on that aspect a lot more. The logic kinda goes that W&L is disproportionately Greek, and thus, must emphasize partying more than schools with a lower % of Greeks. It’s an unfortunate stereotype, but it is what it is. Students do party – just like most places. But my sense is that many tend to read more into it at W&L than other schools. My .02

last year students recvd notification of Johnson scholarship April 1st, via regular mail, along with “official” acceptance docs.

Oh no! Really? I thought they would be sent seperately from admissions notifications.
Guess we have to wait longer than I thought.

^ I thought that also. Perhaps they’ll do it differently this year.
