my next son is now in the process of completing applications for college for Fall 2012. He has a 4.01 GPA but did not do that well on the April 2011 ACT - he got a 23 composite. He just retook the ACT yesterday after spending about a month studying. I know that he is going to have to get a much better score to get accepted for Fall. So here's my question. If he applies for Fall 2012, will FSU offer him Summer if his scores are not high enough for fall or should he just apply for Summer term?

Here is my opinion. If he applies for summer and applies during the early application deadline, I think he has a better chance of getting into summer. If he applies for fall, he likely will be deferred until the next application cycle and then he may get invited for summer or there may have already been quite a few summer acceptances/deposits and he might not get an offer. My D applied right off for summer, had a great first summer term, and hes never regretted getting there early and getting her feet wet.

Thanks for the quick response sunny! One more question for you if you happen to know. Do you have any idea how financial aid (pells, student loans, parent plus loans, etc…) work for summer term? I had one kid start college a few weeks ago and I believe that his student loans are only for fall/spring. Is it the same for parent plus loans and if so, do I have to cover summer out of pocket?

You can get financial aid for the summer session. My D was covered 100% for summer but her situation was slightly different so I don’t know if that is the norm. However, part of her financial aid did come from PELL and she was offered loans but she did not need to take them. Bright Futures is not something that can be used for summer session.

Summer financial aid for summer 2012 is part of the 2011-2012 “year.” Not part of 2012-2012 school year. Summer “belongs” to the previous school year, not the one coming. But other than Bright Futures, which does not cover summers, aid is available. There may be less aid available for summer, but summer is covered under student loan programs. If you are eligible, you will get an aid “package” for summer, separate from fall.
