Iffy Awards?

Okay, I’m sure you’ve all gotten things in the mail where teachers have nominated your for this national award or that national award, most of which involve paying money to partake in.

If I’m attaching a resume, should I put some of those as honors? I wouldnt put them in those precious few spots on the Penn App, but I think they certainly look nice. Like, 'Nominated as an All American Scholar by the Academcy of Academic Excellence" (or something like that) Or Nominated to attend various leadership conferences?

Or will the admissions commitee recognize them as pretty filler and think less of me? GAH!

well, i'm not totally sure, but i think those are not totally real awards. i'm sure almost everyone has gotten them in the mail along with all the other college advertisements. i think they would only care if you attended those leadership conferences. i'm not sure though... but someone else will probably respond anyway.

Those are complete bull **** lol, they are brilliant money making schemes with the goal to take advantage of unsuspecting and recognition-seeking students. I would even say that in general, academic awards (based on GPA) are kind of irrelevant, as the college makes its own evaluation of your academics.

Yeah, don't do it, it just makes you look naive.

Anyone heard of 'Outstand Students of America' though? I thought it was similiarly scammy, but it was on fastweb.com and there's a scholarship attached? is that one okay to list?

Alright, I've got a question for ya'll:

I accumulated 3 awards in high school--2 were school awards and one was a district award for tennis. Is this bad? I don't have any type of nationally recognition and they were pretty cheesy awards in my opinion. I mean.. if I knew it was that important, I would've tried to get more :( Help!

go to the website and see if they ever ask for any money.

krabble: it's not good, but it's more than i have!

26e, what do you mean? lol..

well, i hope awards are not important. i have none, basically. i just wrote down NHS.

i mean i have no awards

Does Class Clown count? Or what about Class Cutie?

clown: no
cutie: this is Penn! of course!

Yeah, I may as well have accumulated none, since mine are pretty crappy. In 9th grade, I got a math award and a student council award, but they really aren't prestigious or anything. The only award with any type of substance was the tennis award, because we became the champions of our district and beat this other team that we almost never ever have beaten (and to this day, we continue to lose to them in virtually every sport lol). However, this isn't an academic award and really doesn't relate with my "passion" (I put chemistry down as my intended major). I seriously don't have any type of EC that relates to chemistry whatsoever. I took chemistry in 10th grade, AP chem in 11th, took the SAT II for chem, and took the chem AP exam. That's all. I didn't join a chemistry club (although we have a science club with like 4 people in it) and I don't have any science competition awards or anything like that. SIGH!

yeah, but ANY award is fine. it doesn't have to relate to your major, or anything.

Hmm. I will give out official CC awards to all of you who are not ED'ers. And they will help you get in. And it will be good.

There are about 93 hours left until decisions. I'm so nervous.. I haven't really finished my other applications ha.. I still need to get crackin' down on those essays. Most of them overlap, so I only have to write one more personal statement, one short essay about why I like to do what I do (academically), and a few "why this college?" It's not that bad, right? :(

THAT many hours? crazy, i didnt even put in perspective...wow

did you get a nomination to something called the national leadership conference? i think for that one, it is okay to mention it on your app because the teachers from your school nominate you

yea, I think I was nominated for that. It came in a pretty envelope...

i really wouldnt put the national leadership conference, especially because half the people in the US got nominated, and only those with enuf money actually go...thats why there arent many people in the pretty pictures they send us...making it look like only the elite go there.
