Does being IGETC-certified increase your chances of gaining admission to a UC?
I mean, you are technically more prepared in terms of classes--just not necessarily your major courses.

Having the IGETC completed is very important for admissions. I think most students that are accepted have completed IGETC.

It's more of a requirement then an "extra." If you don't complete IGETC then your chances of admission are hurt a lot.

Hmph, really? I'm pretty sure a lot of individuals apply without being IGETC certified--don't they?

i've seen on assist that igetc is not recommended for people at my school that are applying to certain colleges...i can't remember which ones but I think Berkeley was one of them. That is also only for specific majors too.

They just recommend that so your grades don't slip with all the extra units.

On the IGETC it says on the back which UCs dont advise on going by it. Like Pretty much all UCs dont advise it for engineering majors.Interesting though it says does not advise for Berkeley's Hass School of Business.

sstory, in regards to Berkeley, it was only talking about engineering and other select majors (like Haas, as Dam Its Johnny stated). It wasn't talking about the whole school.

And yes, people can get accepted to UC without having completed IGETC. For example, transfers from other UC's and CSU's won't have it completed.

For the CCC transfer student, it is basically a requirement for almost all majors.

^ yup transfers from other UC's. I still dont know what IGETC is. Is it like fulfilling basic requirements? I have taken all the recommended classes for people in my major with my grade standing; so is that equivalent to IGETC?

This link explains it all. Surprisingly, it depends on the community college, the major and the UC. While it is not recommended for some majors, it is highly recommended for others...

but what if they have TAP done and not IGETC???

IGETC is more important than TAP. The whole purpose of CC is to complete your GEs so when you transfer you can start on upper division coursework. The purpose is not to complete the honors program at your school but to complete your general education.

ive heard different in terms of admission priority

TAP is very importnt don't get me wrong. TAP gives you priority admission and IGETC does not. However if you do not complete IGETC then you might not even be eligible to transfer regardless if you have or have not completed TAP.

If I transfer from an out of state college to a CCC for sophomore year, would it be possible to transfer my units I've completed that IGETC requires? That way I still have a chance of finishing up IGETC.

Or am I screwed either way?

well say you complete the major pre-reqs you want for whatever school and TAP, then i dont think you need to complete IGETC then right?

IGETC and finishing pre-reqs are a lot more important than being TAP certified. I think the order of importance should go pre-reqs, IGETC, and then TAP. TAP is more of the icing of the cake to your application which should give you a nice boost but won't replace finishing IGETC.

I thought it would be IGETC, pre-reqs and then tap. Maybe the importance of pre-reqs depends on the major? I say this because I see many people get accepted without all pre-reqs completed. I don't see many getting accepted without IGETC.

I would say IGETC, Pre-reqs, TAP. IGETC is extremely important to complete to any UC you apply to. If you do not have IGETC complete by the time you transfer (some UCs I believe will accept some courses to be done in summer prior to transfer) there is a good chance that you will not get accepted to most UC schools. Major pre-reqs are important for every school. However they are only extremely important to students applying to impacted majors at UCLA, UCB and UCSD. I am sure that all UCs want you to have completed all major prerequisites before transfer but I am sure that it is quite possible to get accepted to most UCs except UCLA, UCB, and impacted majors at UCSD without major prerequisites completed. TAP is important for UCLA but even with TAP if you do not finish IGETC and some of your major prerequisites you will probably be one of those 10% of TAP students that don't get accepted to UCLA.

IGETC is not a minimum transfer requirement to the UC system. There are some selective campuses/programs that do require it to be completed. For a nice chart that describes what each campus needs please see http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/educators/counselors/resources/materials/CC_2007/Tran_Matrix_07-2.pdf

If a student chooses to complete IGETC then it must be completed and certified by the community college before the student enrolls at the UC campus; in other words, you can't start IGETC then go to a UC campus and during the next summer go back to the Community College to complete IGETC. As mentioned in previous posts use the ASSIST site to help determine if your campus/program requires/recommends completion of IGETC.
