IGETC is only 34 units and some of those major pre-reqs should go to satisfying your IGETC. Either way, try and do the major pre-reqs for the two or three UCs you most want to get into. There’s no point in doing every single one when ultimately you’re going to select one UC. Also be aware of how highly each of the UCs regard their pre-reqs for admission. It’s more important to have as many pre-reqs done as possible for UCLA and Berkeley, as compared to maybe UCSC or UCR. Also if you’re looking up courses on assist.org they general show every transferable course for your major, not just the required pre-reqs. Be sure to differentiate between which are required, recommended, and those that are just listed as transferable courses.

And to answer your initial question, no you don’t have to finish every pre-req or get IGETC certified to transfer to a UC. There are people that get in missing a few pre-reqs and some that get in without IGETC. However, your best chance of admission is completing both and if pre-reqs are listed as required to be considered for admission like for UCLA or Berkeley those must be finished.

I’ve been in a community college part time for 2 years, I’ve completed about 50 units already, about 23 applies to the IGETC, the others are pre-req to get me into those class or trade class. If i finished everything in that list, which would get me into MOST not all UC and CSU, I would end up with almost 130 Units. before transferring. It probably doesn’t look good that I would probably end up 4 years in community college before transferring with a High 2 or low 3 GPA.(got C in spanish, Geometry and Biology)

I’m just about to lose hope to transfer to a 4 years institution. The damn counselor at my school didn’t help me with my transfer goal at all, all he did was try to convince me to get an AA(Since the first semester) which i don’t really want.

how did you get 34 units for IGETC?
Just looked it over, it’s almost impossible for 34 units IGETC.

Area 1: English Communication
UC: 2 Course
CSU: 3 Course
Area 2: Math
Area 3: Arts and Humanities
3 course(at least 9 sem. unit)
Area 4: Social and Behavioral Sciences
3 courses(at least 9 sem. unit
Area 5: Physical and Biological Sciences
2 courses, one physical and one biological science, which includes at least one corrosponding lab.
Area 6: Language other than english.
2nd year language course
Area 1 is at least 6 units
Area 2 is, assuming you skipped all the pre-req, 5 unit.
Area 3 is at least 9 unit
Area 4 is at least 9 unit
Area 5, Biology is 5 unit and Physical science+lab is 3+1, total of 9 unit at least.
Area 6, Spanish 2, if somehow you skipped spanish 1, it’s at least 5 units.

at the very least i see 43 units and that’s without the american institution requirement. I also had to take pre-req for math and language. I don’t see how i could have done it in 34 units

Obviously depending on the classes you take the amount of units can vary slightly and for a CSU there are additional requirements. The 34 semester units estimate is IGETC for UCs which don’t require the speech course and few of the other CSU requirements. I’m only speaking from the perspective of the UCs because I only applied there and this is a UC transfer forum.

You don’t have to be worried about how long you stay in CC, the UCs don’t really care and they’re very understanding of people that have to work while attending CC, which if you did (not sure you just said you were a part time student) should actually help you if you mention it in your PS. Above everything else to get into a UC you have to have a competitive GPA and it’s imperative to complete as many pre-reqs as possible.

I think for someone in your situation your best strategy would be to figure out which UC you both want to attend and have the best shot of attending and complete the pre-reqs for that one first and foremost. Then if you have one or two missing pre-reqs from your back up choices you should be ok. There’s no point wasting time completing every single possible pre-req for the 9 UCs if you don’t have a realistic shot of admission at some of them. I would say based on what you said your GPA was UCLA and UCB are definitely out of reach. The middle tier UCs like UCSD, UCSB, UCI and UCD will be a reach because they all have an avg admitted GPA between 3.2-3.5. If your GPA will be in the high 2s/low 3s you may just be looking at UC Merced, UCSC, and UCR. So maybe focus on the pre-reqs for those first, select which one is your first choice and go from there.

EDIT: Looking over the classes you completed for your IGETC it’s your language course that makes the biggest difference. The majority of people already satisfy the language requirement with foreign languages they had to take in high school, so they don’t have 10 extra units for Area 6. Without the language requirement you would complete IGETC for the UCs with 38 units which is about normal. However, because you have to complete that in addition to the extra CSU requirements it does make it fairly high around 57 units.

No. Again, they don’t really care how many units you have as long as you have the pre-reqs completed. Sometimes people switch majors or they come back to CC after an extended period or just apply to a number of different universities all with different requirements so they accumulate units, the UCs expect these situations and aren’t going to penalize you for having “extra” units. If you’ve completed all of the requirements, IGETC, major pre-reqs, and have a competitive GPA they’re going to have a favorable chance of getting admitted, regardless if you barely reach the 60 unit minimum or have 200 transferable units.

There only becomes a problem if you have 90+ units and you’ve already attended a 4-year university, in which case you would be applying as a senior level transfer, which they don’t allow. As long as all of your units are from CC you’re fine.

The colleges i picked out for the business admin major

Cal Poly Pomona
Cal Poly SLO
CSU:LB
CSU:LA

What are my chances for these if i finish my last 2 years at CC with only A’s and B’s? Raising my total GPA to around 3.3-3.4
When do i apply for these? I plan to finish the IGETC and Major Pre-Req

Summer 2013
(ready for CSUN and UCR)
Fall 2013
(finished for Cal Poly SLO, CSULB, SDSU)
Spring 2014
(finished for UCLA, UCI, UCSC, UCB, SFSU)

Thanks for your help! You’ve been more helpful than my counselor by far.

^^With those GPA and if you do TAG then you will get into all those school except Berkeley and LA. <- these 2 schools are naturally competitive and impacted

I’m only familiar with the UCs, but I’d say if you get up to around a 3.4 and complete most of your pre-reqs you’d have a positive chance at UCR, UCSC, and UCSB. Then I’d say you have a decent chance with UCI and then I still think UCLA and UCB would be a big reach. UCLA had an average admitted GPA of 3.93 to their Business Economics major (they don’t have a designated Business Admin major) in 2011 and by 2014 it’ll likely be even more competitive. Berkeley has the best business program of any of the UCs so their admissions stats are probably going to be even higher than UCLA.

If you do end up with around a 3.3-3.4 by Spring 2014, you should consider applying for a TAG (Transfer Admissions Guarantee) which guarantees you admissions into one of the UCs you select (except UCB, UCLA, and UCSD) as long as you meet all their requirements (usually a minimum GPA around 3.0-3.2, English/Math requirement, and certain major pre-reqs finished by the end of the Fall before you transfer so Fall 2013 for you). That’s assuming of course the TAG program is still around by 2014, some of the UCs like UCSD, who will be getting rid of TAG next year after just 3 short years, may get rid of it by then.

You may also want to consider applying to UCD as they have a great business program as well.

@ diplimatedmind. you seem to know a lot of stuff about the UC schools and the transferng process!
but i would like to ask you a question! is there really a business program at UCD? i was told that they only offer economics over there.

@ Diplimatedmind Yes, thank you. I’ll apply to UCD also at spring 2014. I’m not allowed to take honors class at my college right now for the TAG program, I need to raise my GPA up more and i’ll try to get into TAG. Where do i find out the schedule to apply for these school?

I’ll be ready for
humboldt, SJSU, Cal poly pomona, UCSB Spring 2013
CSUN and UCR Summer 2013
Cal Poly SLO, CSULB, SDSU Fall 2013
UCD,UCLA, UCI, UCSC, UCB, SFSU Spring 2014

Do i apply right after i qualify? do i wait? I’m not sure about transfer at all, but I think they have different application time right?
