IGETC certification???

So I was at orientation for Davis and one of the girls in my group casually mentioned that if we have IGETC we're supposed to get certification sent to Davis from our community college. What? I'm panicking now cause both the girl and the orientation leader said it was really important. No one ever told me I had to get that done. It's not on the checklist on the MyUCDavis site, not on any paperwork that I've seen, not in the conditions of admission. How in the bleep were we supposed to know to do that? I'm kind of annoyed/worried about whether it'll get there in time or if there's a deadline or anything. . . did you guys know about this? I mean, I assume it's not exclusively a Davis thing. I'm sure it's everyone who transfers with an IGETC . . . but wow, if that girl hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't have known. Would I have been kicked out eventually or what? And why had I never heard of this? :(

When you send your transcripts there is usually just a box on the form that you have to check off so they send IGETC Cert.

Just send another set of transcripts with the IGETC Cert from your CC.

I’ve been told multiple times that getting certified is necessary when doing IGETC. Heard about it during orientation, transfer seminars, from multiple counselors and it’s in huge bold print on our IGETC tracking sheet that shows which classes qualify for the different areas of IGETC.

As for what happens when you don’t get certified, you basically end up doing the normal set of GE’s that your school requires. Depending on what classes you took, you may be done or you may have a few more classes to take.

Relax. Just like audioslavery said, send in another set of transcripts with IGETC certification and your good.

If you dont do this, your admission shouldnt be revoked but like vertex said you will be required to fulfill the schools GE requirements, which can be a lot of classes because many of your cc classes will not articulate into UC courses.

Wow. Lucky you, this is really the first I’m hearing of it.

But thanks for the replies, I’ll head to the CC tomorrow and get that sent out

You’ve honestly never heard of it? I heard ‘IGETC’ or ‘IGETC Certification’ so many times! =/

Fortunately, Davis isn’t like Cal and UCLA who are super strict on having IGETC completed (unless your major shouldn’t follow that path) so I’m sure you’ll be okay…but definitely, if you have completed it, request a transcript and have that certified (it does take a bit longer since an evaluator has to fill out the form and sign it) or else you’ll be stuck with your GEs all over again! Oh, I’m not sure about your CC, but at mine–there’s actually “partial IGETC completion” if you don’t quite have all the classes done.

Quite honestly I’m also surprised that a counselor has never even told you about it, although on the other hand (and I’m not trying blame you), nothing is going to be handed to you anymore. Perhaps you could’ve done a little more research ahead of time to gain a more thorough understanding on how the transferring process works, and then been aware of the IGETC certification. But, again, I’m still pretty shocked that any counselors you might’ve spoken to never at least mentioned it.

If you were unaware of the IGETC, may I ask what kind of classes you were taking in the meantime? I hope you weren’t mindlessly taking courses you just thought you were supposed to do; the IGETC is a guidance tool that has a full list of the General Ed courses you are to complete prior to transferring.

I followed IGETC and I took all of the GE classes you’re supposed to take with IGETC, it’s just that no one ever told me that I needed to send the certification. It was never brought up when I met with counselors and it was not included in the checklist of things to finish on MyUCDavis. I mean . . . I feel like maybe I missed something but I thought that checking the IGETC box when I applied was enough to take care of this. My orientation leader basically told me that I needed to go to my CC and get that sent right away. It’s not that I didn’t do IGETC, it’s just that I guess Davis doesn’t have the record of me doing IGETC . . . I’m not quite sure what happened.
