IGETC - Foreign Language Requirement: Help!

Hi, I’m a Fall 2015 UCI Transfer student. I thought I had completed IGETC because I remember my Spanish classes in high school being C’s and better, but it turns out that during attending UCI summer classes, my IGETC was sent and notified to be “Partial” because of one C- in one semester of high school spanish.

The UC website states: "However, California community colleges may grant partial certification of IGETC to students who are missing no more than two requirements. Students submitting partial IGETC certification should complete the missing requirements at either UC or a California community college as designated by their department. "

And I have now learned that to still get full IGETC, I would need to finish the foreign language requirement BEFORE i officially transfer, Sept. 24th. Does anyone know of online summer classes at a CCC that start mid july and finish by late september and possibly have openings? I am now in Irvine and can’t move.

And if this is impossible to do this late, does anyone know if this means that “likely” I will be able to take just one spanish class at any CC or UCI in the Fall to check off the foreign language requirement and not have any more lower division GE? I have tried talking to the counselors at my dept., but even though I am taking summer classes, the head counselor in my department keeps shooing me off saying that they’re too busy with orientation and don’t help incoming students until Fall. “Talk to your CC, it’s not us.”

TL;DR. Does anyone know of online summer classes at a CCC that start mid july and finish by late september and possibly have openings? I am now in Irvine and can’t move.

I really appreciate the feedback.

You can take the course at the UC. You have a year to complete. However, you can only complete outside of the UC during summer.

Re high school courses, as long as the last term language was a C, you should get approval because language is a validation subject. So if the C- was any course before the final term of your two year language, you are certified. In other words, not partial IGETC, but full IGETC.

@lindyk8 Thanks. So I have a year to take one language course (spanish 1) that fulfills the rest of the Partial IGETC, and not have to do UCI’s full run of spanish?

I got a bit excited for a second but unfortunately, it is the last semester in HS that got the C-. The partial has already been sent to UCI with “Partial” written on it and I have a copy of it where I checked.

In your opinion, what is my best option?

Ahh, Ok. So just make sure that your semester course of Spanish 1 is the equivalent of a year of college language. It will say it somewhere in the course description at the top. Or just look and see if it is listed as the course that will fulfill IGETC. If you can take in summer at a CCC, you’re free and clear. But it might be too late. So then, yeah, you will need to take a course (I assume one) at UCI or another UC during next summer.
