IGETC/GE quick question

Hello. Do I absolutely HAVE to complete IGETC or GE before I transfer? I'm a biotech major and I'm transferring to UC Davis fall of 2012. I have most of my IGETC done, except for a few courses in humanities. Basically, I have a LOT of pre-reqs to finish before Spring 2012 in order to qualify for the TAG and if I take IGETC/GE courses, it'll overload me. My counselor stressed IGETC, but she said I don't really need it. Can someone clear this up for me? Thanks!

P.S is it okay if I haven't completed ANY of my required pre-reqs for my major when I TAG but I complete them by the time I transfer? Or will this have a negative effect on my TAG/Transfer?

Completing IGETC can only help you. If you don’t complete it, you’ll have to complete the campus GE once you transfer… Furthermore, if you get disqualified from TAG for some reason, having the IGETC may give you a better chance of still being admitted!
To my knowledge, it’s ok to not gave pre-reqs done by the time of the application (as long as you have them done by the time you transfer, it shouldn’t be a problem).

Thank you! Yeah, I was confused but I think I understand now.

Is there a limit to the amount of classes/time I can take/spend at my UC AFTER I transfer? Eg: 2 years or __ units?

biotech huh? career goal?

IGETC involves foreign language right? im avoiding that one.

yep. I’m pre-med but just in case, I want a good degree also.

Your high school foreign language counts for IGETC. 2 years with above a C and you’re done!

■■■■■ believe it or not, but i graduated high school in CA without taking a foreign language.

im pre dental and doing molecular bio @ davis, hopefully if im accepted next '012 like you.

lmao really?! wow. got lucky there I guess

Just do GE then. IGETC and me don’t get along, especially with all those bio/calc/chem classes :p

■■■■■. i know right! the think i have heard is, IGETC isnt pushed when you doing bio/phys/chem type degrees.

just completed my GE @ 3.4 right now. between now and spring 2012, ill be doing my bio/chem sequence at CC.

why biotech tho? thats extremely advanced just to go pre-med.

I completed most of my IGETC @ 3.2 this semester. Will bring it up to a 3.56 by the end of this summer though :open_mouth: I have NO pre-reqs done for my major as of now, I’m starting in the fall.

Yeah, I’m going to do neurobio/physio or just bioscience in general. The requirements are the same as biotech so I’ll change it on my TAG app!

btw. How did your school let you graduate without foreign language? haha.

Don’t be afraid of foreign languages (says the linguistics major, lol)! Pick one you’re interested in and you’ll see it’s not that bad. Do you listen to foreign music? If you do, being able to understand the lyrics might motivate you to learn a specific language.
I recommend you take a language that is related to English (a Germanic or Romance language). There will be some cognates (words you can “guess” the meaning of because they are similar to English words) which will make it easier for you to learn the vocabulary.
