Hi! :)
I'm currently a biology major at a community college with plans of transferring to a UC.
I've talked to two different counselors at my school & both told me two different things.
One told me that I shouldn't worry about IGETC & just get good grades for my pre-reqs & complete the general ED for UC.
The other told me that I should give IGETC top priority and worry about my pre-reqs later on.
I NEED HELP! Should I just complete my pre-reqs & do the two courses in English, 1 course in math, etc. or should I follow IGETC while completing my pre-reqs?

The UCs I'm applying to are:
UC Irvine (Top priority)
UC Davis
UC Santa Cruz
UC Riverside

Prioritize your pre-reqs and math and english requirements first as they hold the most weight, along with UC transferable GPA in determining admission. IGETC is not an absolute requirement as you can get admitted to a UC without completing IGETC. It’s also something that your CC determines not the UC admissions officers. The UCs do not critically review your application to verify IGETC completion, in fact, they can’t verify whether or not you completed IGETC until AFTER you send in your transcripts and IGETC verification form issued by your CC which happens well after decisions are out.

Really admission officers are reviewing your application for prerequisite completion and to see if you meet all the mandatory UC admission criteria like GPA, 60 units, math and english, etc. The really have almost nothing to do with IGETC, so it’s not something that will weigh heavily in your admission decision. The counselor that told you to prioritize IGETC over pre-reqs should be fired, that’s about the worse advice you can give a potential transfer. Especially one applying to a competitive major like Biology.

math english and major classes first then igetc…u can finish the rest of ur igetc when u transfer out but the math and 2 english are most important
