I just have a quick question to the experts of transfer transferring to UCs.

I have stated that I will complete IGETC on my application and my january 31 update.

Around, March 11, I have dropped couples classes and updated my "UC update form again" on March 14, saying I have dropped classes and I clicked "no" on Will you finish IGETC by this spring?

Anyways, I have been accepted to UCSD, and I see that the decision came out on March 13 (according to what they said to me on the email; although, I received the email on March 24).

I have emailed them saying I am only taking certain classes and that I have dropped some classes.

What would you guys do ? and also, how would you guys contact them?
any directions or sources or websites will be very helpful. (also examples too !)

Thanks much.

P.S. Should I be worried a tad of my acceptances because of my I.G.E.T.C. changes. I have talked to my CC counselors and they all said I.G.E.T.C. does not help one get into a UC school, it just becomes easier for me because I don't have to do GE courses at a certain UC. (btw, these same counselors have proven themselves wrong countless times.. another discussion though)

How important is I.G.E.T.C anyways? and why do UC consider an applicant better if one has finished I.G.E.T.C ?

Unless you did TAG for UCSD, IGETC isn’t a factor really. It’s just a general curriculum; you don’t need to complete it and completing it doesn’t really do much either. It just satisfies GE’s for some colleges at UCSD although i’m not sure what it covers for Berkeley and LA.

Generally those two schools don’t care if you do IGETC or not seeing as how they actually look for more rigorous courseloads rather than IGETC.

if you did TAG for UCSD, then you will be rescinded. if you didn’t do TAG, don’t worry about it. it won’t matter for Berkeley or LA.

As long as you have 60 units done, you should be fine.

However, changes to your planned classes for spring (PL) are very important. You should notify the UC’s you applied to immediately. Don’t wait for your decision. Here, this should help:

Fernis is wrong. IGETC does matter, and it does do a lot. If you don’t have IGETC done or follow the breadth requirement of UCLA/Cal, you’ll be at a disadvantage because that means your GEs are not completed. Not completing might lead to an extra semester and admissions want you to graduate on time.

this isn’t true. my friend wouldn’t take IGETC because he was aware that IGETC classes didn’t match up to the classes he needed to take for a specific major (Robotics for Cal). You don’t -HAVE- to take IGETC to apply for it. it is merely an option. there is no set way to apply for a school. You’re basically saying someone who completes IGETC by passing a math class (Trig, lets say), compared to linear algebra, as well as advanced physics courses would be more qualified for cal? don’t think so.

1 There is no such major as robotics at Cal

2 If you are talking about Electrical Engineering then of course he doesn’t need IGETC since IGETC isn’t needed for engineering majors due tot he number of pre-req classes you need

3 Not having IGETC will likely have your admission rescinded because they admitted you on the basis of having it completed and thats the truth

i realize that it’s more than a math class. i did IGETC. i just posed math as an example. obviously, yes, if he stated he was going to finish IGETC and he doesn’t it’s obviously going to affect him negatively. i’m just posing the example that you do not need to actually go through IGETC in order to be admitted.

There is no such thing as robotics major at Cal. are you kidding me?

L&S wants their students to have a liberals art education; so naturally, they want their students to be well verse in a broad range disciplines. I guess you missed the point of GEs.

And from a L&S standpoint, you need IGETC/GE breadths done to get a good shot of getting admitted at Cal or UCLA.

it depends on your major, some of the major require IGETC and some does not. for instance, Major of Electrical Engineering does not require IGETC. One of my frds get accepted to Berekeley without the IGETC. So I think if you missing one or two classes, you still be fine, as long as you have 60 transferable unit before the fall semester. Complete all your major pre is a very important to Berkeley and LA. so work hard and good luck~
