IGETC/major prerequisites...?

I apologize if this sounds dumb but I'm very new to the whole transfer process...

If I attend a CCC and want to transfer to UC Irvine as a bio major, do I still need to complete the entire IGETC thing AND major prereqs, or just the major prerequisites?

The thing is, I want to go to CCC before a uni (mostly to save money) after I graduate high school, but I'd hate to have to take a bunch of English/History classes again.

Hey Keira,

Completing IGETC at a CCC covers you for the GE, general education, at your chosen school. You'll have to either complete IGETC or your university GE, and if you don't take the opportunity to complete IGETC during your 60 credits at a community college then you're probably wasting time. Major prereqs are those undergraduate courses that are required to complete your major but that aren't covered by GE.

For most majors you'll want to complete both IGETC and major prereqs, they're two separate things. I think the only exception to this advice would be some Engineering majors.

Hope this helps. Your CCC counselor will be able to lay it all out for you. It's all pretty straight forward once you're actually attending college.

Thank you for your help.

I'm guessing that AP exams can satisfy some of these GE reqs?
