IGETC Question

Hi everyone,
I am currently a freshmen at Hartnell College wanting to transfer to UCSC or UCSD as a business major. Currently I'm taking classes to fulfill prereqs and IGETC. There is something I am not sure about IGETC units so I want to ask you guys for some advice

Area 5 - physical and biological sciences states in my school catalog that I need at least 7 semester units. I have already fulfilled group A: physical science by taking a 4-unit Chemistry course(with Lab) this Spring. Since I really hate biology, and courses offered in the Anthropology department conflicted with my accounting course, I decided to take an Anthropology online class at Foothill College. That class is a 4 quarter units one. Here is where I get really confused...

If I convert that online class to semester unit, I get only 2.67. Along with my 4-unit Chemistry, I only have a total of 6.67 semester units. However, if I do it the other way, that is, convert my chemistry course to quarter units, I get 4x1.5 + 4 = 10 quarter units, which means I have more than needed unit for this area (7-9 semester units or 9-12 quarter units - source: University of California - Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC)). I am kind of confusing with these converting stuff and I don't know if I have already done with this area or do I need to take one more class? Because my school uses semester system, does that mean I haven't finished the requirement for Area 5 yet? Reaaaaaaly look forward to you guys' advice, I am in total confusing now...

I think I read somewhere that you are allowed to convert to whatever system benefits you most

Really? Then that would be awesome. Do you happen to remember where you read it?

UCSC and UCSD are both on the quarter system.

Hartnell’s 4 unit Chem w/Lab course will be converted to 6 units and Foothill’s aleady on the quarter system. That makes you have 10 transferable units total.

I think you’re good.

Thank you. I know both these schools are on the quarter system. But the school that will issue IGETC Certification for me is Hartnell and it’s on the semester system, so I’m a little bit worried… I would never think that units conversion could be THIS complicated though.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I am currently in a same situation too, mine is IGETC Area 3: Arts and Humanities though. I have taken 2 history classes for Humanities, now I need one more class in art. But the truth is, I am HORRIBLE in art T___T , always get a D or F in high school and I don’t think I can pull a P in any on-campus art class, so I look online and find a couple of easy art/music classes that offered at Foothill for 4 quarter units. 3 + 3 + 4/1.5 = 8.67 < 9, does that mean I will not complete this area of IGETC and therefore have to take one more class?
