IGETC sais 2 years. uc says 3 years. confused.

so on igetc it says im fine with 2 years of a foreign language.

i took 2 years of spanish in highschool so i thought no big deal.

but then i was talking to my friend at a uc and he says once at uc they require 3 years to graduate from the uc.

is this true? so i could transfer fine with the 2 years from highschool.. but once at the uc i would be screwed because i literally forgot 90% of that spanish. i took them fresh and soph year of HS and took a year off before going to CC so that was over 3 years ago..) so i would prolly have to start fresh at uc and take 3 more semesters of spanish? spanish 1, then spanish 2, then spanish 3?

if so id rather just take those classes at CC and probably do like 3 semesters at CC lol.

can someone clarify this for me? thanks.

any help? ???

Incorrect! The only thing I could think of is maybe your friends major requires a third year of a foreign language.

In regards to IGETC, you need two years of one foreign language in high school with a grade of C (2.0) or higher. Send high school transcripts to cc. No third year is required after you transfer unless major requires it…some majors (Linguistics, Literature, etc) require a third year.

What is your major?

Is he in UCI? If so, it could possibly be that most non-science/math majors requires 6 quarters worth of foreign language pre-reqs for that major.

its at ucsb.

i plan on doing economics at ucsb.

he is doing film i think

[UC Santa Barbara General Catalog - General Subject Area Requirements](UC Santa Barbara General Catalog - General Subject Area Requirements)

there it says i need 3 quarters right? or is 3 quarters equivalent to 2 years in hs? someone please clarify. ty

If you finish IGETC then you aren’t required to take the additional foreign language at UC

it is possible that the IGETC has changed. i noticed on the 2009 IGETC that 2 levels of foreign language were required, and then the next year, 2010, it had changed to three levels. i was certified for 2009 without any trouble because the additional language course was not required at that time. but, if you have breaks in your education you cannot certify for prior IGETC years. you must show that you have continually been going to school working on the 2009 requirements. if they change them midway then you are not obligated at your school to get the additional courses, but once you transfer, well, the schools have their own requirements. good luck and it is reasonable to be confused by these matters because they are confusing. haha

You only need 2 years for IGETC. Your specific major may require more. If it does not, you have nothing to worry about.

Is 1 semester worth of foreign language at a CC satisfy it? Because I did 1 semester and it satisfied my foreign language requirement for IGETC

im not worried about igetc. i know i satisfied that when i was in hs.

im worried once i transfer to ucsb, if i will need to take foreign language classes. cus if so, id just like to take care of that at cc.

Like I said, the answer is “no”, unless your major specifically requires it. You can find out if it does on UCSB’s website.

You said you will complete IGETC and your major @ UCSB will be Econ. In this case, no you will not need to take any more foreign language classes. You are good!

our school no longer certifies IGETC with just two years of a HS foreign language. so be careful. the 2009 IGETC did certify with two years, but not the 2011 and 2012 IGETC. so check the fine print and good luck. at our school if you do not have a break in between semesters then you can certify for the IGETC the year you Started taking classes. so i could certify for 2009 requirements but they were sticklers and checked to make sure that i had not taken ANY breaks. good luck dudes.
