IGETC vs CSU transfer options?

Community college freshman here, first semester. I am attending CC to transfer to a CSU to get my bachelors in Business Administration - Computer Information Systems. So before we attended college, before we even registered, actually, even before we graduated HS, my CC had a counselor-student meet orientation kind of thing. We basically sat in a room for a couple hours and we were told everything we needed to know to prepare for CC and what we needed to transfer, what our options were at said CC (like transferring, getting a certificate, getting an AA, CSU, UC, etc.) We were given three sheets of paper at the end, each outlined and listed all the class requirements there were for general education to transfer. The first was to transfer to a UC, the second was to transfer to a CSU, and the last was to satisfy the IGETC. As far as I knew at the time, and according to the paper, it was to be eligible to transfer to a CSU or a UC... this sounded perfect, because I could choose to go to a CSU or if I changed my major or choice of school I could go to a UC too! Although, even still now, im kinda confused as to what the IGETC exactly is and especially whether or not it really gets us eligible to transfer to a CSU or UC. So is that true? It seems too good to be true, there must be a catch, or it must be not true. I am skeptical because why wouldn't everyone go for the IGETC if it allows you to transfer to either a CSU or UC, you have both options available, so why would you not go for that?

Should I stay on track with this IGETC option as a guide for my General Education requirements? OR should I move to the transfer-to-a-CSU option while I still am only in my first semester?

IGETC is definitely the way to go. The majority of requirements for UC and CSU IGETC are identical. There are 2 notable differences. The UC IGETC has a foreign language requirement, which CSU does not. This could be fulfilled based on your high school coursework. CSU IGETC has a oral communication requirement which is not required for UC. Other than those 2 things, the requirements are the same.

@2016Candles So why doesnt everyone go for the IGETC if they are going to transfer, since they will have the option to go to either a CSU or UC?

I do know that there are a handful of majors in the UC system that don’t necessarily want that IGETC. Those are usually majors within STEM, because they have so many major requirements that the Gen. Ed requirements are usually a little less.

I completed the IGETC requirements for both Cal State and UC schools. I am a social science major, and I applied to both Cal State and UC schools and got into schools within both systems. You may want to check the majors for each school that you’re interested in applying to, and see how about specific department in that specific school once you to for fill the GE requirements.
