Igetc

How important is it to be IGETC certified before transferring? Has anybody transferred not having completed the IGETC? Also, I haven't done any ECs, but I do work nearly full-time... should I bother? How necessary are they? Would joining a lame school club (environmental or something related to bio) suffice?

Transferring to Berkeley this spring without IGETC certification.

I wouldn't recommend it, though, and I did think I was going to complete the IGETC. In fact, I did -- my CC just wouldn't give me the certification (I had too many credit hours outside the CC).

Dunno about the ECs. I worked two jobs the whole time and was actively involved in one EC fall semester this past year.

IGETC is VERY IMPORTANT for letter and science majors.

IGETC is NOT important for engineering/physics/bio/biochem... (those high units majors) majors.

You ** must ** be IGETC certified in order to transfer into College of Letters and Science. If you dont, then you are not even eligible to transfer.

As for ECs, it won't matter much.
EC and Employment, the Adcom will look at same level. One is not better than the other.

As long as you have a decent GPA (Above 3.5) and better, in an honors program or a transfer alliance program, then you won't have any problem transferring over to UCs you want (unless it's Haas School of Business).

My friend is transferring to Letters and Science at UCLA w/o IGETC, but she's completed all of her major requirements (Poli Sci). She had a good GPA though- 3.8.

ah nvm, my mistake im sorry.
You don't have to complete IGETC hehe.
forgive me.

But it's useful to complete IGETC because then you won't have to take any more lower division classes at either CSU or UC (unless the assist.org requires you to take certain courses at the college you are transferring to).

For letter and science majors, IGETC is NOT a MUST but with IGETC, you enhance your chance of getting a lot more than if you don't have it done.

I changed my major from electrical engineering (I don't need IGETC, I only followed the lower-division courses like physics series, calculus series, and so on) to Math (letter and science major). I talked to many counselors and representatives from different schools, they all adviced me to follow the IGETC for any letter and science major.
Again, some exceptional students may get in without IGETC for letter and science but most get in with IGETC!

I just want to point this out for clearer explanation.

actually do need igetc for bio majors as well.

IGETC makes ur life after transferring a lot easier too especially if u plan to graduate in 2 years.

since u need 60 units anyways, and if ur major is not too prereq crazy, no real reason not to do it.

Ok so i think haas breadth requirement and prereqs already includes IGETC. Will this count toward my IGETC?

For the record, I was an English major. So it's definitely possible to get into Letters and Sciences without the IGETC. Not an exceptional student, either -- GPA was a combined 3.4, major GPA was a 3.9, last two semesters' GPAs were about 3.7, transferred with one year at a CC, previous year at a UC. Not exceptional, but most definitely not the norm.

Still, if there's no reason you can't complete it, complete it. It makes life MUCH easier. Because I didn't get it, I still have to finish Cal's GEs, and despite the fact that I would have completed the IGETC, I still have 2 GEs left to finish at Cal.

The reason why UCs likes students who are majoring in arts/humanities/social scienes to finish the IGETC before transferring is because they want the transfers to start on their upper division work right away, and not complete some earlier requirements that will only slow down their progress for a degree.

Alright, so I guess IGETC it is.

Thanks for all of the responses. You guys were a lot of help. I just wanted to know, because I will definiely have 60 units before I transfer, but just not have the IGETC completed. The 60 units that I now have figured out for transfer, include 6 units of summer school. I didn't really want to go to school during the, newly implemented, winter session. But, yeah, I now have to take another 6 units for the off session(winter/summer), which is time that I wanted to spend working and relaxing(AKA not going to school).
