IHP is a 2 year language requirement, correct- plus the semester or summer abroad? Can you place out of classes? How is that done, placement test? Does the time abroad count as a class if you are taking a language class while you are there? S is interested in Spanish, but 2 years of it might be a real gpa drag. He is taking Spanish 4 as a Sr, but it is usually his lowest grade. However, he thinks and I agree Spanish is almost necessary today and I think the IHP designation would help in the job/grad school hunt. Also, could he take a class or two over the summer, would that count?

You can place out of levels. My son placed out of the 100-level classes and started at 201. He had not had Spanish since his junior year of high school. He will complete 202 in the spring (did not have room in his schedule this fall). Considering that your son has some experience in the language, I doubt it will be a drain on his GPA.

So, if your son placed out of the 100 level did he have to take only 1 year of language or the two years. With the honors program requirement of 3.3 - anything less than a B+ is a drag on it. I know IHP is only 3.0 so you can get more B’s.

I tested out of the IHP’s language requirement by taking the CLEP exam and getting credit for the first two years of French. As long as his college transcript will show 2 years of language study by his college graduation (the credit does not all have to be the same language), he will meet that requirement. The language credit can be taken at UA, another college/university, and/or be from AP/CLEP/placement exams.

IHP also requires two “international honors by contract” courses in addition to the language, study abroad, and IHP 105/155 requirements.

My son only needs to take 201 and 202 since he did place out of the 100 levels.
