Hi everyone! I'm an international student from China, recently I was admitted to architecture school in Illinois Institute of Technology for 5-year undergraduate study. I also received $22,500 scholarship per year. I have heard IIT's architecture program is very good and because of the money they offered, I am thinking to study there.

But there's one thing I am not sure--I've never found any rankings or official comments about IIT's architecture program, how does the architecture study really like there? Does anyone who has been there before can tell me more about this school? I want to get a green card in Chicago by getting a job after graduation, does IIT benefit me in working abilities?

Thank you guys!!

Hopefully some current students will answer some of your questions. I will try to answer from a faculty perspective. Remember, however, that I am a physics professor, not in the College of Architecture.

My impression is that the education you get at IIT in architecture is quite rigorous. The program is undergoing some change now with the new Dean Wiel Arets. The school has a good reputation in the Chicago area and a lot of practicing architects from the city are Studio Professors. IIT’s main historical reputation is associated with Mies van der Rohe but the education has certainly evolved since then. If you search for rankings of architecture schools, there are not many to be found and those usually only show the top 10 schools by whatever metric they choose to use. The program had a significant growth over the last 10 years but the past 2-3 years have seen shrinking enrollments due to the lower popularity of the major throughout the United States. The recession was pretty tough on architects. My architect friends tell me that things are looking better and by the time you graduate, the Chicago market should be much stronger.

I can’t tell you what the chances of getting a green card might be. That depends on lots of factors and it is difficult to predict 5 years into the future.

The question you have to ask yourself, is what school is the best value for you, given all the financial aid offers you have.

Good Luck!

Great answers xraymancs! Thank you so much! You helped me a lot.
