Transfer applicant to:

University of Chicago (#1)
Northwestern
DePaul
Loyola

Public High School (weakest part of application/incredibly bad school district): About a 3.4 cumulative GPA; ironically my highest grades were in my hardest classes (although the entire high school process felt like federally mandated daycare). My school offered five AP classes total, and I took four, acing them. It's stupid things like a C+ in photography that really bring down my GPA. 5's on the AP tests. Recommendation letters say that high school transcript does not reflect potential.

California State University, Chico
First semester: 3.86 with 15 units(4 A's and a B+); rigorous classes (only freshman in senior English class).
Second semester: Taking 19 units, more difficult classes (upper-division philosophy + English/Chinese), have a 4.0 thus far, probably finish with a similar GPA to last semester. Recommendation letter from my English professor with whom I regularly visit at his house; he graduated Stanford and taught at UPenn + Oxford.

ACT: 31 (33 English/28 Math/34 Reading/29 Science) I should've studied for this, but it's too late to dwell.

EC's (probably weak also): Internship at local paper (they publish my music reviews weekly); attended every lecture Chico State hosted; was editor, contributor, and active member of lit magazine in high school for four years; tutored in English; volunteered at the local library; was mentored by local author. Won a national poetry contest for a sonnet I wrote my Junior year.

My essays are probably the strongest area of my application. I wrote 80 lines of dactylic hexameter for one of UChicago's, mimicking Homeric verse. For another essay I wrote a short story to a self-written prompt. The rest are, I hope, strong prose pieces. Think that's it.

Chance and I'll write you a haiku!

I don’t normally chance, but I really want a haiku.

I think you have a great chance at UChicago! Being a freshman in a senior class is REALLY good, that along with your great English ECs, your stellar GPA, and really clever essay make you an ideal candidate. ACT is eh, but that’s whatever.

what a marv’lous name

shamelessly i post
because i fret over this
my message reads bump

Your high school academics definitely weren’t up to par with the transfer schools you’re applying to (Mainly UChicago and Northwestern). However, what matters the most, your college GPA, is absolutely phenomenal. And like Francais said, I’m pretty sure the adcoms will consider the fact that you pulled of such grades as a freshmen in a senior class.

Did you take part in any ECs during college?

Well, not really. My internship + lecture attendance have really been it. I read (probably a book a week) and write a lot independently (probably 3-4 poems and a short story a week), but I don’t think I can include those as EC’s. None of the campus organizations have really grabbed my attention. Still, that’s uplifting news!

'gain the warbling cry
rings clear and proud o’er the thread
dost say the strong bump

You’re right! Your high school transcript doesn’t reflect who you are at ALL. Your college GPA is amazing, and what actually stood out from your ECs is that national acclaimed recognition. That’s pretty good! I think you definitely will be one of the few admitted transfer applicants to those schools! You do have the drive and potential! Good luck!

his words like freshly baked bread
delicious to eat

You have a good chancing hook. Further, you seem to be doing very well in college. I would say you’re almost certainly in at DePaul and Loyola (Chicago, I assume). I would say you have good chances for Northwestern and Chicago, and probably upgrade Chicago to “very good” based on your essays.

As long as you presented a valid reason for wanting to transfer, I’d call Chicago more likely than not. You seem like you would be an excellent fit, from everything I’ve heard of the school. Good luck.

(By the way, I’ve never heard someone mention dactylic hexameter outside of my Latin class. Your essay reminds me of a friend writing an AP Human Geo essay as a series of haikus.)

To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if you got in to all of them. You shouldn’t be either.

I agree with the above poster. Not many students show such drive and potential in an area. Good luck and I hopee you get in :)
