Hey guys I visited Illini Tower yesterday, it looked amazing. I was just wondering why there were so many bad reviews online? I mean the place looked so amazing I cant imagine anything wrong with it. I just would like some comments on current or past residents here

Thanks!

My d and I visited several of the private housing. She liked IT the best. It reportedly had better food and the suites were a lot nicer and better suited for her than Bromley. I think that with any of the private housing, they are probably less social than the dorms, but one has to weigh the pros and cons of each living situation. If my d went to UIUC, than private housing would be the best fit for her, even if they are less social.

However, I would love to hear about any other opinions on IT versus other private housing options.

Bad reviews? Would you ind showing me? I really hope to live in IT…

this is just the site with the most reviews. Others have bad reviews too. Only a couple of good reviews here and there. I assume they are associated with IT in someway but some of these people make it sound like you’re living in a dump. I’m posistive it cant be that bad.

I currently live in IT. Feel free to ask me any questions you have.

Well I guess my biggest concerns are the food and rooms. I mean the room they showed us on the tour was fantastic but i just want a general comment for the rooms overall. The food thing isnt that big of an issue but i just want an overview agian.

Rooms are very nice. My nephews stayed there a year and my son did a summer program there. IT is gorgeous however my son wanted to have the traditional experience and stay in the six pack. He loves it. If it were me, I would be at IT.

As a former RA at Illini Tower I can give you all the ins and outs.

Illini Tower does a VERY good job of putting on a good show to those touring. Everyone is smiling, all the amenities look great. Now here is your catch. Once you sign that lease it all falls apart. The movie theater they show you is never working, sometime even on the tour its broken but they have us tell you it was turned off so tours do not mess with settings. The pool table and ping pong table they show off, well the equipment is always damaged, missing, or just plain cheap so you are better off buying your own. The bedroom they show you is probably the nicest in the building. They show you the room with all the new un-touched furniture, the rest of the rooms do not look like that. The other rooms have old A/C units that leak, kitchens covered in grease and beds that have nasty little stains on them.

Their walls are thin so you can hear EVERYTHING. and let me remind you this is college, so all the girls your frat boy neighbors bring home… well you can get to know them fairly well.
The staff is all over worked and under paid so pretty much never want to help you. The RAs are treated like poop for lack of a better word by the main office. They forget that we are college kids and expect us to somehow work 25 hours a week and still do well in school and have a social life and want to be nice to residents with problems all day long.

To give you some perspective: when I left 15 RAs quit, 2/3 housekeepers quit, marketing agent quit, and 97% of the kitchen staff quit. Leaving only about 6 of their employees in the building. I laughed at how many residents walked into the building with big sparkly eyes and then were crying to cancel their lease a week into school.

Illini Tower makes you expect like you are living in a luxurious dorm with all these wonderful things. in reality you are living in a cheap, over priced building with a company that only wants your money.

I didn’t live in IT, but from when I’ve been there…the rooms are nice, but you can hear everything next door…there aren’t enough elevators/they’re too many people for the elevators, and the food is god awful.

IT “does” have a great location, notwithstanding, of course…

Adults always seem to think that the private housing is the best. My parents wanted me over at Bromley or IT. I did some research, and I realized that it wasn’t what I was looking for. I didn’t come to college to be pampered and party. I came to college to mix with people from all sorts of backgrounds and get an education. With IT and Bromley, they don’t have a floor shower. Plus, you’re going to meet a lot more people with a bigger budget than most who also have it easier than most, and therefore may not be as serious as those who worked hard to get here. Another thing to remember is that more often than not, the people in IT and Bromley are in fraternities/sororities, so think carefully about what sort of crowd you want to be a part of. Nice rooms are great, but to me, it’s not what college is about. I wouldn’t mind it so much, even, if the dorms weren’t known for being so filled with higherups that don’t care about you and noisy frat parties.

Thanks for sharing…twice.

My D lived at Presby Hall, a private dorm, as a freshman last year and is returning to live there again this fall. Similar to engineeraway’s post she knew many students who lived at IT and didn’t care for it, but they all survived. If it were me or my child, I would heed engineeraway’s advice in #8. I’ve not heard of anyone at Bromley or Presby trying to break their lease for similar problems.

I think it is bizarre how parents/students claim they will somehow get a “more social or experience” by living in the 6 pack. Believe me, all the dorms are social, including the privates. Being “social” in college is not a function of where you live, it is a function of who you are.

@Vannah08510: private dorms are not much higher in price than the university dorms (and worth every penny IMO) and there are financial aid recipients at all of the private dorms and “bigger budget” kids in the 6 pack and other halls. And all have students of different races, ethnicities.

Thanks leapinlizards. Could you or other current IT residents tell us about your experience at IT? The rooms, heating/ cooling, condition of the furniture, the noise, the people, your roommates, your RA, the food, maintenance issues, elevators, etc.

I lived in a residence hall much like Illini Tower as a college student. I later became an RA, which was a wonderful college experience! I now have two college-aged kids of my own, so I know about college life as both a student and as a parent. Our goal at Illini Tower is to help make your U of I experience the best and most rewarding it can be by providing a convenient, affordable and fun living experience with numerous amenities and one-of-a-kind student programs. The team and I look forward to seeing you soon! Please feel free to call me at 217.344.0400 or email at roy.myles@clvusa if I may be of assistance or answer any questions.
