I saw a local news source say that Illinois will raise tuition by 20%, putting it over $30,000 a year. The state hasn't paid U of I a lot of money, due to their budget crisis. Anyone else hear about this?

*Champaign/Urbana, IL - Parents and students may get stuck making up for the lack of funding from the state to universities. Interim University of Illinois President Stanley Ikenberry now says the school could have to raise tuition for next year’s incoming students by as much as 20% to make up for missing state aid.

The state owes the university $487 million. That figure continues to grow as the state tries to figure out how to handle a growing budget deficit.

The university is among agencies, school districts and other organizations around the state that aren’t getting paid. Just a few weeks ago, Ikenberry said he anticipated tuition would need to be raised by about 9%, but he now says the situation has grown more dire.*

If your talking about University of Illinois Urbana Champaign the no I have not read that. I would be surprise if it’s true since current tuition for instate is around 10k.

Ughhh :/

Its already one of the most expensive instate publics (about $30k a year! I dont even want to know what it will work out to be in the future) and its going up even more. I was accepted but I’m already not planning on attending because I just don’t think its worth it.

^
If it increase it will be about 3k higher not 20k. Current in-state tution is around 12000.

Not including room and board…

Would it increase for OOS too? That’s not good for me if it does :D

Current in-state is: $11,614 , U ILLINOIS

at first it was thought that a 9% increase would suffice. Now, they are considering as much as 20% increase.

9% increase would be: $1045…so about $12,700
20% increase would be: $2323…so about $14,000 for tuition.

I imagine the OOS rates would also go up, but not by the same % because the base is higher.

If you want the College of Engineering or Business, your tuition is already significantly higher. And, don’t forget R&B, and other fees. This just makes the situation even more difficult.

How does this affect current students? Does it crap-can the promise to freeze tuition for 4 years?

The article is about tuition and does not mention increases in R&B.

Yes, we looked into it for my daughter for engineering. The cost (this year) is over $26,000 instate including tuition/room& board. Crazy!! This is a really ugly campus too – she really didn’t like it very much.

The proposed tuition increase for UIUC is stated for Freshmen only. Nothing has been said yet about R/B.

Annie,

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. My son is class of 2003. He loved his time there, and we visited him often (D and I). He was extremely disappointed when D, 8 years younger than he, didn’t apply.

Upon bringing D to her uni, he promptly declared that he thought just from looking at the place that she would be begging to transfer at a month, that his UIUC was so much prettier. D and I told him at that point that we had always thought UIUC was horribly ugly, and that we both thought her chosen school was beautiful.

She is now a junior and he still can’t get over thatwe think UIUC is ugly.
