The email I got for this looked kind of sketchy.

Anyone else get this?

Maybe a scam?

Anyone else get this?

Maybe a scam?

I received the same email, looked kind of sketchy, although the James Scholar email was in a similar format. I emailed Dr. Hirschi personally (not just hitting the reply button) so we’ll find out. Crossing my fingers that this isn’t a scam >.<

I replied to the email, got the original message sent to ma again, for some reason.

Im guessing its just a new scholarship or something, and not a scam.

15k a year is really too major to not be discussed ANYWHERE on the website, but idk.

I’m just waiting on the hard letter for proof lol

I’m on my iPod at the moment, so the response isn’t going to be all that great >.<

I emailed them back and just got a reply a few hours ago - it’s legitimate. It’s just a new scholarship that they started this this year, no worries. PM me if you want proof, it’s somewhat private.

is it for OOS? what are your ststs? thanks.

I am out of state, but the email did not specify.

35 ACT w/36 math
2300 SAT 720m/790c/790w
Ap scholar
3.96 gpa, 4.63wgpa
nat.merit semifinalist
decent ec’s (nhs, ect)

music, thanks. 15/yr is indeed too good. is it renewable? (nothing about this on Illinois.edu!). Are you also getting the Achievement Scholarship and the departmental one. normally those two are the top scholasrships, 12K+10K. if 15K is, added that will make it a no brainer to pick illinois even over MIT.

have you made your selection yet. what other schools are you waiting to hear from. Congratulations on your fine credentials.

I’ll throw out my stats too. I’m OOS btw.

36 ACT
2220 SAT
800 Math SAT II,
4.0 GPA UW (current weighted GPA isn’t available)
Overall, taken 7 AP’s - three last year (Calc AB, Lang + Comp, and US History) were 5’s
National Hispanic Scholar
AP Scholar
ECs: Drum major, uberrrrr involved in music, tutored three spanish students in english, other than that really the standard stuff

I’m going to call Illinois tomorrow when I get out of school to clarify all of this, but it’s 15/yr renewable. It’s a new scholarship they started this year, so there isn’t any information out on this yet. No news on if it’s for OOS or not either. I got the Achievement Scholarship as well but they just sent out the apps for the departmental scholarships (those you need to for separately unfortunately, another page long essay >.>). EDIT: Going for MIT and UC-Berkeley as well here.

Is it from any particular engineering school or College of Engineering ? Which branch have you applied for (and been Accepted) Mockingjay451, armusic51.

Also did you get the email asking you to apply for this scholarship or did they already award you this scholarship ? Is it in addition to the other department scholarships ?

It says in the email that it is just for the College of Engineering as a whole, but I was accepted as an EE. I did get that email about the departmental scholarships as well, the 10k or so scholarships I believe, but this is separate from that. It’s in addition to all the other scholarships, including the Achievement scholarship for OOSers and any of the departmental scholarships.

**Only got a 34 ACT, sorry. Should really proofread my posts before I throw them up.

Here’s all the information I have so far on this scholarship, from the emails I received.

And the second email I received after asking about the legitimacy of it, etc:

MCH being Michael Hirschi, the Undergrad Admissions Chair for ENG.

yes itsme, I got the achievement scholarship as well as a 3,000 dollar departmental scholarship. It brings the total cost of admission down 30k, but as an out-of stater, a decent scholarship from my state school (umd) will still make it a better option.

Oh and I was accepted for aerospace.

I just called them a few minutes ago, and here’s what I’ve got: it’s mainly a scholarship created for URMs with good stats. Many URMs couldn’t pay the high tuition of UIUC, especially as OOS, so they wanted to alleviate that. No word on the selectivity though.

Forgot to mention that I’m hispanic =)

hopefully this bodes well for the banneker key in umd. URM’s tend to get that one also

Same here =) We should be getting a letter for this sometime soon, for anyone that wants some more info on it.

Am I correct in assuming you guys applied early admission? As my son only received accepatance to engineering last night 2-18… which was the regular admission notification date… we didnt receive this offer, and I’m wondering why, as his stats are similar to those above…Thanks

Right, we both applied EA. I received the OOS Achievement scholarship sometime during mid-January if I remember correctly, and this scholarship was received on Feb 5, so it was a considerable time after we were admitted. I wouldn’t worry, just give it some time.

I guess I’ll post my stats too for comparison. I also received this scholarship, but I’m white. 4.0 GPA, 36 on the ACT. I guess I’m glad I got this. I thought it was a little ridiculous to only get an offer of $2000 a year before this.

I got it too. I’m pretty glad because now I’ll be cutting my costs off by a lot, making a UofI a pretty great choice whether I get the Provost or not (which I’m not expecting…)

36 ACT, 5/~500 class rank, National Merit Finalist, 7 AP tests with 5’s on the three I’ve taken, extracurriculars include lots of involvement in music program (trombone), science olympiad (only this year though, since it started last year), academic team (two years), and martial arts for about six years. White.
