The Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) is a global campus. Not only are we situated in the heart of Chicago, but IIT also has one of the largest international student populations in the country. This allows students to interact across many cultures that represent more than 100 countries! On behalf of the International Center, I hope you'll decide to come to IIT and take advantage of the many study abroad opportunities available to all IIT students. Currently, we have 35 students abroad for Spring Break traveling in Japan, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland! To be sure, there is an international study abroad program for all IIT students - regardless of your major!

And by heart of Chicago, they mean Bronzeville, where every campus building has armed guards.

I"ve been to the IIT campus several times. It is urban, with all that goes along with that. Never did I feel the least bit unsafe there. You can check out the Clery report (required for all colleges) to get an objective report on campus safety and security. I have seen an unobtrusive campus security guard on occassion, but the response to the OP makes it sound like they’re carrying automatic weapons in a battle zone.

I understand that some people are uncomfortable with urban campuses like IIT, UPenn and the like, but I think it’s unnecessary to dramatize YOUR discomfort by portraying the place in an unfair light.
