D was accepted to several MT programs, as well as to a couple of programs we know less about. She was accepted into the Illinois Wesleyan BFA MT program, but I am concerned because I don't see much posted on CC about it at all. Does anyone have any info about the quality of MT training there? D applied because it is a small, personal program closer to home, and seems to encourage opportunities to study other subject areas (especially during May term), as well as to travel abroad. Graduates seem to be working. She also was accepted to Lawrence Conservatory as a VP major, where the vocal training is top-notch and students are encouraged to work on musical theatre repertoire, but there is no formal program. There is a mainstage musical every other year and a student produced musical every year, as well as a yearly opera. I'm wondering if their theatre program is strong, in addition to the excellent musical training they provide, and if anyone has more info about MT there? I know it would be a totally different orientation, and is of less interest to my D, but nonetheless, a fabulous opportunity which I think is worth looking into.

Lawrence in Appleton Wisconsin is a very fine school (I grew up nearby). I agree that the conservatory is excellent and she will receive a fine small school education if she attends. If she really wants to perform professionally in national tours, NY etc after graduation, I’d go with with one of the MT programs that has the best feel for her. Best wishes!

I highly HIGHLY recommend Illinois Wesleyan because of their director Scott Susong. Scott knows his stuff, knows the industry, is involved in the MTEducator’s Alliance, which is constantly trying to improve MT training in the US, and has many working alums.

A vocal performance degree will NOT help you in musical theatre anymore. 20-30 years ago things were different, but the vocal style for musical theatre is completely difference today and operatic training for four years will not advance you in the direction you need to go. Lawrence is VERY traditionally classical. Just because they do a musical does not mean that it is done in the style (acting and vocal) that your D will be expected to perform with upon graduation.
