Resurgambell:

My concern is rooted in my hearing that there are budget problems this year in CAS. On the New Students Page for ILR students coming in posted on June 9, it says freshman can register for ONE elective either free elective or one Western intellectual tradition or science, in mid July. Why wouldn’t you register for 2 electives because adding only ONE would only add up to 13 credits total. This doesn’t make sense because 1/2 freshman take OB first semester, the other half take Labor history second semester:

First Semester:

OB or Labor history= 3 credits

ILR 1500= 1 credit

Fresh. Writing seminars= 3 credits

Micro Econ= 3 credits

One Elective=3 credits

Phys. ed= no credit

This adds up to only 13 credits?

You should be allowed to take 2 electives each semester as a freshman to make it at 16 credits, right?

well 12 credits is the minimum to be considered a “full time student”

that is odd…didnt realize budget concerns were that tight. but i’m guessing since it says that “some of you” will have room for an elective…means you should be able to add as many as you like…

call and ask ginny this lol…i hope you’re not bugging her 25hrs/already

Dear Resurgambell:

We haven’t called Ginny at all actually. I hope your interpretation is correct in that you could take more than one elective if you have space in your schedule. It looks like transfers can. I would think all Cornell students in general, are allowed to take over 12 credits a semester regardless of college? Maybe the site isn’t wording this clearly(I hope).

Thank you again for your patience with these questions!!! Sorry to appear too detailed and picky. We are just trying to figure this out.

Btw Ginny is retiring after this summer.

so ive been looking at some coures…im currently enrolled in ilr, but id love to take a lot of courses in CAS govt as electives…im really interested in politics

how do i know if the govt courses are only open to gov majors??
also, when im looking at the course catalog, i have no idea if the course is offered to freshmen, or sophomores?? or does it not matter?

also, do we only sign up for the fall sememster for now? and then sign up for spring semester classes later on?

and for the science and technology distribution requirement…can we take any science course offered by cornell or does the course have to be one from the list provided by ilr?

http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/studentservices/curriculum/requirements/distribution/upload/Science-and-Technology-Fall-09.pdf

you will need to look at the course catalog (not the course roster) to see what the pre-reqs are for certain courses…

you sign up for courses a semester at a time.

it’s usually only the courses offered there. for science. although you might get approval for something not on there

thanks resurgambell!
i have another question though…

when i do a class search from the student centre, Introduction to Organizational Behavior does not show up…but according to the ilr website, it is a mandatory course for the fall semester…is there anything that i should do about this?

and also for the FWS, is there a catalog available?

i’m going to be a way for about two months this summer so id like to figure out as much as i can before i leave…

Intro to OB will be one of the courses you shall be pre-enrolled in (if you’re one of the ones taking it this fall)

FWS catalog i dont know about.

I think you can stop worrying about this stuff until orientation comes. I would make sure the Cornell Admin paperwork is taken care of (health form, etc)
