I'm entering ILR in the fall as a sophomore transfer student and I just received a letter that I need to take a math assessment test. I was wondering what sort of material it covers and whether the score counts for anything. I couldn't find any information about it online other than that it needs to be taken in order to take statistics classes. If anyone has more information on it, please let me know.

The math test covers basic algebra, I believe- nothing of advanced/calculus level. One only needs to take it (as an incoming freshman; I'm not sure how it works for transfers) if you didn't get a 3,4, or 5 on an AP Calc test. I believe there is just a threshold score you have to attain to pass it, and the score doesn't matter beyond that. After that, the only math class you do need to take is statistics (right now, ILRST 212). Hope this helps!

the 35 question math exam cover stuff up to pre-calc. I belive you need to answer 15 questions correctly to pass (you only need to pass it, not ace it). This sounds like a small number, but there will be at least 8-10 "what the heck is this?" type questions on there. some basic review will be enough, just make sure you pass. If not, you wont be able to take stats or labor econ (which you need to take to graduate). Also, if you dont pass, you'll be placed into an intro math course to 'refresh' you memory then you can take the exam again in January.

o ***** I won't be in math freshman year, so I hope that doesn't hurt me!

Completely unfair, I know, but..

as an alum who majored in the physical sciences there, I chuckled when I read the title of this post.

Sorry gomestar, I just couldn't help it.

i know, it's not meant to pick out students who havn't taken math (since everybody in ilr usually has at least calculus), but to make sure students are up to date with some of the stuff that will be covered in upper-level econ and statistics classes at ilr. Heck I aced calculus, but the only thing I think I can do that's calc related is derivatives. We forget this stuff fast when not in a math major. They're not hard questions, you just forget this stuff over the years.

... if it helps, I've taken econ and stats yet the only about 5% of each class was actually based on math. It was mostly theory.

ILRST212 was an absolute joke, lol. I loved it, though, since I never had to go to class.

Ya I've taken up to pre-calc/prob n stats (you can take them at the same step in my school, so I took the 1st junior year and the other senior year) and then the stats was AP so I'm hoping I'll do well.

Make sure to review your log rules before the test. But other then that its not hard at all. You can take it a couple of times before they throw you into that pre-cal class. And yes- ILRST 212 was a joke!

are we allowed to use graphing calculators on it?

You can take it multiple times? nice!
