I'm in ILR and have been assigned three classes: microeconomics, freshman Colloquium and Intro to OB. Is there a way I can start "wish listing" other classes? I want to change the section for one of the clases (I'm scheduled too late in the day and would rather take an earlier time) - can I do that in advance? How do you rank your FWS if your schedule is not set? I'm interested in business - is there a first year class that is recommended? I assume that I will take the three scheduled classes, choose a FWS and a gym class, and that I will need to take two other classes? Is there a typical schedule most ILR students with a business interest would take?

1) You make changes to your schedule during the Add/Drop period. You can't do that in advance; you do it along with everyone else on campus.
2) FWS has a separate registration process where you rank your choices and they try to give you your highest priority.
3) As for a business class, there are plenty. Depends on what you want to do. A lot of kids take accounting, marketing, etc. There is no typical class.

Add/drop starts on the 27th of August -- Wednesday before classes (which start Thursday). A lot of people change their schedule then (in fact there is only one class on mine that is staying how it is, heh), so it's not a huge issue, unless the classes are filled -- this year you can check if they are filled using the Class Search function on Just The Fact, at http://jtf.cornell.edu/.

FWS ballots are due on the 27th of August as well, so you should be able to sort out your schedule before you turn it in. You will meet with your advisor during Orientation, and they will help you plan your schedule. And, if you happen to not like your FWS/have it not fit, you can add/drop them -- a lot of people move their FWS during the first couple of weeks.
Unfortunately, I cannot answer the ILR-specific questions, as I'm an Engineering student -- but someone should come along sooner or later. Hope this helps!

Regarding FWS ballots- can a sophomore sign up for an FWS using a ballot?

Also, are there any recommendations for any particularly interesting FWS classes? I'd prefer something with a light workload since I am taking very challenging engineering courses next semester.

Hey everyone. It's hard to suggest FWS classes because the instructors change etc. If you look at the median grade reports, the easier FWS seem to be those classes like Mystery or Cultural Studies or Linked Stories. They sound boring but seem to have easier grading. Just my two cents.
