ILR School Supplement Essay

"Describe your intellectual interests, their evolution, and what makes them exciting to you. In your essay please address how the ILR curriculum will help you fulfill these interests and your long-term goals."

I'm so stuck. started and stopped this essay five times... Anyonehave any idea what the admissions office is looking for here?

Do you have any interests? Somehow relate them to why you want to go to ILR…

Chess, sports, etc?

I’m having the same issue. Damn.

He wrote about his interest in law and how this interest grew from being captain of mock trials and debate team in HS etc. He also talked about his interest in labor law and related this to family background-dad is from colombia. I think it was one page long.

Most importantly, I feel that your essay should not be too generic. They are looking for you to be a good fit within this very unique major- perhaps, more than with CAS for ex.

Know the different areas of emphasis within the ILR school-organizational behavior, human resources etc. and be able to discuss your own interests as they relate to one of these areas. Be specific!

One thing that really helped my son was reading the page on the ILR sight which showed where different grads had gotten jobs- For whatever reason, this helped him to key in on ideas!

Hope this helps! -Best of luck to all of you!! ILR seems to be wonderful place to be & my son just loves it so far.

This is my opinion but, saying that you want to go to law school is not the best way to get into ILR. Like the above posters have stated, try to incorporate the different “branches” of ILR (CB, HR, and etc) to show that you want to be there. Majoring in ILR will not necessarily help you figure out if you want to go to law school either.Thats just my 2 cents, goodluck.

thanks! my dream has always been to be a sports agent, so i’m tying certain classes and other aspects of the school that would help me achieve my goals. Its difficult to write an entire essay on a specific topic such as this though, should i include other things? Tie in ec’s, etc?

My daughter just finished her ILR essay and to say the least it was a challenge. Think hard and write from your heart. In the end she wrote a great essay. Good luck

If you are having trouble, look at the ILR curriculum and describe what aspects of it stand out to you and why they stand out to you.

I believe your Why ILR essay needs two components. You said you want to be a sports agent. What have you done so far (clubs, activities, internships) that show that you are on path to this career. Secondly, and probably the most important part is, you must show that you have taken all the advantages around you but that ILR has more to offer. I know for a fact that last year there was a sports labor management class. Also, being a sports agent, you will need to know basic CB, which is a requirement to graduate in ILR. You can talk about how ILR allows you to take many courses outside of the school to satisfy your requirements, so you may be able to take more classes in AEM, law school, etc.

I remember when I wrote my ILR essay I tried to show that I knew a lot about it.For example, I mentioned as an aside the type of chairs they have in Catherwood (its the ILR Library) and how comfortable they are. These little things may show admissions you really want to be there.
