Should I indicate that I’m Native American on my application even if I am only 1/30th. My dad has Cherokee ancestors along with his irish ones.

i dont think that counts lol

LOL. I'm assuming that you're not serious.

1/16 is the "minimum."

GOOD TRY

did you trace your lineage to a relative on the Dawes roll?
otherwise nope.

1/30 is pretty hard to get. 1/32 is possible, though, but 1/30... :/

lol maybe I should try!! It's just a read something on the ask the dean forum thing and it said if you put your cherokee..and I really do have cherokee blood in me on my white side..that even if you can't find records that they usually take your word for it because there is such a lack of Native Americans at schools.

the very fact that you're asking or contemplating "putting it down anyway" gives us the sense that you're not comfortable with your cherokee heritage and that you really shouldn't be counted as one.

1/30th? That's an interesting percentage to arrive at. I'd love to hear the story behind that...

Seriously, don't milk things like that unless you really deserve to. Nice idea, but you know.

incest?.........

Make sure you indicate it "with reservations" ;)

No seriously, if you dont have proof, be ready for a rejection.

Er, For large tribes like the Cherokee, You need 1/16th... And, for colleges to VALIDATE that your natvie armerican, you have to show a card, it's cvalled a tribal card. Different tribes have different requirements...You need to show proof for the tribe somehow...even paternal.materanal DNA testing.down the lines..basically, colleges, don't consider you a native american uness you have that revered tribal card...to get it, you need proof to show the Tribe, some reuire 1/8 or more, 1/16 th or more... CHerokee is 1/16th...so, you can't get one, and since you do't have one, colleges don't care.
WHy do i know this even though i'm not NAtie America? A Guy in my class just got a tribal card...it's a WHOLE PROCESS you have to undergo, lots of paperwork...

Ok..I've just figured out I'm 1/16th Cherokee. Do you think it's worth my while to try and trace my ancestory to the Dawe's roll? How much of an advantage does this gives me in the admission process?

Ever notice that when some white guy is claiming or pretending to be part Native American it's always Cherokee? Why is that? Were the Cherokees such great lovers that they spread their genes that far and wide?

I think the biggest Indian tribe in the US is the Wannabes

So you went from 1/30th to 1/16th?

You're really desperate. It's too bad you can't get accepted anywhere based on your own merits.

I'm sorry, but it's just as bad as URMs not being able to get accepted based on their own merits. I think it's totally unfair.
It's true though..I am 1/16th..my father's, father's, father's, father was married to a Cherokee.
I just put 1/30th because I was just making a random guess.

Not one that was very mathematically thought out, but I just picked an approximate...

ok, apply for your tribal card

Hire a geneologist, get birth certificates, register for your CDIB card, and check off the box! Once accepted, you can be proud of the diversity you've brought to the campus and start 1/16 Native
American Club.
