What are the fraternities like? Do you really have to pay a ‘membership fee’ or something stupid like that? And is being in a fraternity largely helpful to social life?

Yea I agree with what’s been said. Although people from Hopkins can def find a place on wall street, recruiting at Hopkins for such positions isn’t as prominent as it is at the Ivies especially Wharton or Harvard. But if you want it, you can have it. just expect to work a little harder…more networking/interning.

No it is definitely possible. For International Studies, you need a language…depending on what language you take, you have to complete the Advanced level. After the advanced you only need about 4-6 more language courses in order to have a minor (again depending on the language)

International studies is a great major to choose because it overlaps with about 4 different areas.
All of your interests fall within the IS curriculum.

Hi everyone, I am a junior and want to apply as ED next year. Please tell me what are my chances of getting into JHU

SAT:2250 I don’t remember the exact numbers as my mom has the password and does not divulge it to even me.

Unweighted GPA is 3.8 Took AP Bio and revived a 4 and I am taking 4 this year: Ap Enviro, Us, Chem and Lang. SAT II BIO 740

I have done some community services in a youth organization racked up 80 plus hours form 9th grade and have volunteered in a hospital for 40 plus hours. I learn Vocal Indian music from when I was 5 and won an award in 9th grade. I have also gave out many recitals in ky temple. I am the editor of my school newspaper and play varsity tennis from 11th grade, NHS member, won an award for volunteer services, also in clubs such as unity in diversity in which I hope to be vice president, history club which I hope to have a position in next year and math club. I am also in Science Olympaid and Masterminds, which is like College bowl.

Thanks for your time from my HTC PH39100 using CC

LehighChemE, this is a direct quotation from AdmissionsDaniel in another thread:

"I personally think if you have a strong interest in Hopkins and can afford one of these programs, you should do it. It will not only provide you with a great look at Hopkins to help with your college search, but it doesn’t hurt when applying as academic enrichment programs always help in admissions reviews.

As for the Hopkins programs over other summer programs at other universities, I can’t really help there. The students I know who did the pre-college programs at JHU really enjoyed them (aside from the humidity of the summer in Baltimore)."

mcbosco, at the moment, Hopkins is not very known for Business. That being said, the name Hopkins will still carry weight wherever you apply, and it has a dual degree graduate program with Wharton School of Business in UPenn. Also, Hopkins is one of the best in international studies, so I am majoring in that and Applied Math and minoring in Econ so that I would be a strong candidate for Business School.

bigapple3, I’m an IS major. That is 100% possible since, as you said, there is a lot of overlap… Also, IS requires proficiency in a language as well as writing intensive classes, so you could take writing intensive classes in another language to have the language minor overlap

dipset33, all fraternities, no matter what college, require a membership fee. I’m not in a fraternity (just finished my freshmen year) and I can’t say it has affected my social life too much- I still go out on the weekends. However, I think I may join a fraternity next year since there are some social advantages to being in a frat. But you’ll have a social life either way.

vampyfreak, start a chance thread. However, I’ll tell you this- on paper you look good, but so will about 75-80% of the applicants… It’s your essays and recommendations that will make or break you. Also, do more community service. Doesn’t link good if the majority of the community service is from freshman year. The admissions officers will think you are drifting away from community service and therefore won’t do any community service at Hopkins. BUT if you are applying ED, you do had a much better shot at getting in.
