I'm a current NYU student-ask away! VERSION TWO!!

Hey I decided to create another "ask away" thread because the other one got too clutered.

Anyway my name is Jason and I'm a freshman in GSP living in Third Ave North.

You guys can ask me any NYU related questions or you can PM if you don't want everyone to see. Try to keep your questions directed to me only and don't create back to back convos with other members in this post. This will help me to see your questions and answer them as fast as possible. I'm here to help so ask away!!!

Someone already PM'd me and here is the answer I gave them.

FOR GSP PRE-MED STUDENTS:

There are a lot of pre-med GSP kids actually. Theres a special pre-med version of GSP so they make sure you take all the required classes by the time you graduate. Some pre-med GSP kids that I know take calculus as an elective plus the three required gsp courses. And other students I know take chemistry in CAS plus the three required GSP courses. And sophomore year there are only 2 required GSP courses to take, the rest are up to you. You shouldn't worry though, if you tell them you're pre-med they will make sure that you gey everything done in time for you MCATS.

How will my GPA be obtained since I'm an American abroad, in a region whose school system works on a different basis.

How are Americans GPAs obtained? The final grades at the end of the course averaged up?

If yes, will my GPA be obtained on the standardized test results which are mandatory at the completion of a subject[O-levels to be precise]?

Do you like the food served on campus?

Hi there! I've just got a couple of quick questions...
1. Do you know about how many students are admitted to CAS each year? If you don't know, it's no big deal...
2. How is the atmosphere in terms of academic competition? Is everyone always trying to get perfect grades, or is it more laid back?

Sorry GRG I'm not really sure about international-related questions.

About the food though? It's nothing great, its decent. Some days will be good and others will be terrible but all in all its bearable. You can always eat out around the city if you want to.

I know they have dorms that are like apartments, do they have any that come in singles (if I were to pay the difference)? or do you have to have a roommate?

bandnerd06:
1) not for cas specifically, but for the whole school about 33,000 apply and 29% of that make it in. but its probably less this year because we have a record amount of applicants (more than any school in the country)

2) a lot of people are laid back but then again a lot of people work their asses off especially the pre-med kids. so theres definitely a mix. but i wouldn't say its a super competitive place

jesminder:
1) yes there are some aparments that have single rooms. meaning that it would be a 5-person apartment (2 doubles and 1 single). there are a few in third north and u-hall. if you want a single you might as well request one of the traditional dorms and get a single in there. hope that helped everyone

chocolate is good: cas applicants have high sat scores, high gpas (top 10% of their class), a lot of EC's
excel: evertyhing is great except for your SAT scores. you better raise them if you're applying for next year. if not then best of luck

Well, I'll keep this short. I applied to CAS.
Do you think I have a chance?
My SAT score is 1420/2100. My ACT score is a 32. I took three SAT IIs (Lit-710, US History- 680, Math IIC-610). I've got about a 3.7 uw GPA. I've got 4s on two AP tests (US History and Calc BC).

Thank you very much for any comments... And thank you for the answers to the question on the earlier post.

how is the school of continuing and professional studies for undergrad hospitality major?

thanks jason..I am working on the SAT :)

Is it possible(and easy) for CAS students to take courses at Stern? For example, if I attend CAS, would I be able to minor in business at Stern as well?

bandnerd: you have dcent chances, SAT scores may hold you back
JJJNET: The hospitality major at SCPS is great... I know a lot of people in that program. They are required to take some GSP courses since GSP is a part of SCPS
Phoenix: its hard to do anything in stern. it will be hard to do a minor in business at stern while in CAS and I mean very hard cuz they dont like letting new ppl into stern. you could always do a dbl major with economics at CAS

Thanks, jason.

I mean more of, can you get an apartment at NYU, by yourself completely with zero roommates. I know I can get the same type of apartment off campus, but it's out of the question.

Wow that is kinda stupid. I was planning on majoring in Computer Science and take the prerequisite courses for med, law, and business schools as well. I guess this will be impossible at NYU? :(

phoenix, CAS students can take up to 16 credits in Stern.

Jesminder, no, NYU does not have apartments for one person. Don't even count on getting a single room when you're a freshman. Unless you have some documented medical reason, it won't happen.

What are the average stats(GPA, SAT etc) for admitted students at Stern?
