I'm a current NYU STUDENT- ask away!

OH, and say I got over 32 credits worth of AP credits (34), which is their maximum allowed credits, would they just award me with 32? Or do the last 4 credits for the course not count?

well if they said 32 is the max tehn I'm guessing that's all they'll give you

And Is Foreign Language Efficiency Required?

well you have to take 2 years of a foreign lanuage. However, if you think you're fluent than you can take a placement exam and place out

Do you think CC [COLLEGE CONFIDENTIAL] reflects the type of people (the stats of the people) who apply to NYU? And get accepted?

I'm not really sure because I haven't read many of the other NYU threads. But all I can say is that there is no typical NYU student

So NYU only requires 2 years of language?
What are the MAP requirements and can anyone get out of them?
Is there a way to get those credits through AP?
Does NYU require that one takes Calculus in CAS?

yes NYU CAS requires 2 years in a foreign language, I don't think the other schools require as much but I'm not sure

There are a bunch like Writing the Essay, Con West, and a few others and 2 yrs of language, 1 semester of math, and 1 year of science

Yes you can get out of them with AP's- you can place out of a year of science with a 4 and you can place out of math with a 4 and spanish
4) no

NYU CAS requires 2 years.. what if in HS you took AP foreign language?
What kind of AP would you have to take to get out of science?
What kind of AP would you have to take to get out of math?
Do people ask you if you're in GSP?
What are some things that you know that NYU particularly likes? (ie: Being in a particular sport, a particular type of volunteering)

I want to major in international relations but for nyu you can't apply until your sophomore year. Should I still write IR as my intended major on my application? Also, should I write about it in the essay question asking why I chose this academic program?

Remember that IR is like an honors program. Only several people are accepted as IR majors. It's competitive. But I don't think applying as an IR major affects your chances of admission. Good luck w/ your essays. I'm still working on them too, and they're f'ing due tomorrow!

Much love to fellow procrastinators. Sleep is totally overrated. What is it about NYU that makes so many people choose it over more elite schools? I have three friends who chose it over Columbia. Two more chose it over MIT and UPenn, respectively.

I'm not sure if you've any knowledge of University Hall, but I'm very curious as to how far the walk is from the Union Square location to Washington Square Park. I'm strongly considering applying to University Hall for housing (I've been accepted early decision), but I'm skeptical about the purposedly lengthy walk.

^ If you're from NYC its going to be a breeze. but if you're not you might find it a bit lengthy - new yorkers are just used to walking a lot. You'll probably get used to it.

to festoon--

i think your friend who chose nyu over columbia is just fkdkjksjkkWHACK. I applied ED to Columbia, fell in love with it after the summer program there, and cried when i got show down. Man, I would've absolutely freaked if i got into Columbia.

Miche, I've always suspected that my friend's not right in the head. And he's not even very happy at NYU.

Also, I really feel your pain about Columbia. My heart was broken Early, too (by Harvard). Oh well, we're all going to end up at amazing places and cure everything.

Are freshmen required to dorm at NYU?

Are students generally happy to be at NYU?

Are there any commonly shared feelings? (Like NYU students generally have a hatred for a certain school etc?)

hey guys, i'm a senior at nyu and saw this thread, and just thought i'd answer a few questions. i lived at uhall for 3 semesters, and the walk is 20 minutes, tops. less if there is less people walking around, but union square is quite busy. it's a great dorm though- there used to be a dining hall, but i think they are replacing it with a dunkin donuts. i wouldn't let the distance from campus be a reason not to choose to live there.

unless you are a commuter student, i believe all freshmen are required to dorm at nyu. it's a good thing, i think, bc most commuters that i've met seem unhappy- it's very hard to meet people unless you live in the dorms, join clubs, etc etc. students seem to be happy at nyu- the people that best succeed there are independent and motivated. if you are the kind of person that thrives in a city, doesn't mind being one of many, and likes to work hard, you'll do well.

commonly shared feelings? everyone laughs at our mascot being the Violet- i believe nyu's trying to change it to the Bobcat (named after our library cataloug) but it's still pretty funny. i've heard jokes that most people who go to nyu are just ones who got rejected from columbia. most people i know joke that nyu is made up of kids from NY and NJ. i wouldn't say there is a huge bond between students; people are proud they go to NYU, but like to make fun of it whenever possible.

Is getting in worth all the effort? or is it overrated? i really want to go, but most of it is because of location

jason, why didn't u go to cornell then? isn't cornell an ivy, therefore more prestigious?
