I'm a first year, ask me questions if you have them

Thanks for doing this, its always nice to have a student perspective!
Question - how is the LGBT community? Large/Small involvement?

Do you know any transfer students? If so, do you know what kind of stats they have?

yes we do have transfer students, but…nobody really knows where they are. Ive met just one, and that was on the first day standing in line for something. its weird…
as for LGBT? I believe there is a substantial community, but I can’t profess to be involved with it. But its very accepting here-and there are a lot of RSOs and groups for LGBT.
The largest one is Queers and Associates I think ( Same thing as Gay Straight Alliance, but the GSA acronym is already used by the Graduate Students Affairs Office, so they came up with another name…).

Lol, well, thanks anyway.

Weather update in Chicago? How rough is it? Especially for those that didn’t grow up so far north. (I’m from South Carolina)

To follow up on that question, how was the hurricane? If I am not wrong, it seems that a lot of people are evacuated or something. Does that happen often? Is it dangerous?

Has the scavenger hunt started yet?

"Honest question: how many of your friends have ivy envy? " - objectiveperson

Well, you obviously do.

objectiveperson, you’ve brought nothing to any threads you’ve posted in here. Please go away.

@simp1eton. We do have a “hurricane season” but besides Irene, none of them are ever really taken that seriously (as far as evacuations). If there was ever a serious threat, my house would be toast. I live right off the coast

as far as I know, very few people here have Ivy envy. we’re UChicago and proud of it.
For example there are class shirts that say “If I wanted an A I would have gone to Harvard”. And the first day of my astrophysics class we watched a video where they interviewed Harvard grad students about how the seasons work and they were all wrong-to our delight.
Scav starts up in May if I am correct. So we have a longgg time to get ready for it.
Weather wise it’s not bad right now. Still kinda chilly, averaging in the 50s, high 40s. We did get a snow flurry last Thursday which was mega exciting.

This will be kind of difficult to answer but how would you rate the premed program at UofC? I’ve seen some past posts about how this college is a terrible choice to be a premed major…

luciDream: It’s not the quality of the premed program that is why this school is sometimes considered bad for premed… The program itself is fantastic. The problem is that it is significantly harder to have a good GPA here than it is at other schools. Unfortunately, med schools are notorious for looking only at the numeric GPA and MCAT scores and not taking into account where you actually studied. So yeah, you’ll probably have to work harder at the premed program here than you would at most other schools, but you’ll also get a lot more out of it (hopefully).

The questions regarding the weather are hard to answer. It is completely dependent on what your background with winter is. If you’re from the North East, then the winter here will be comparable, if not a bit more mild. If you’re from Texas, then yeah, you’re going to be cold.

how is grad school placement in the sciences (specifically biology)?

Here is a really good website (it’s from Reed College):

[REED COLLEGE PHD PRODUCTIVITY](Doctoral Degree Productivity - Institutional Research - Reed College)

Evidently, UChicago does exceptionally well in graduate school placement across the board but particularly in the life science. There are literally more research opportunities here than students to fill them. I joined the lab halfway through my first year, doing real lab work and having my own projects.
