I am a junior as well. Here is the advice my Dad gave me. I was in the same position you are, I wanted to either move to Los Angeles to attend a fashion school for this cosmetic program or attend another school for fashion design. The 2nd school was a bachelor’s degree, 4 year school, etc. I knew what I wanted to do and I was determined. My Dad told me that you need to have a job that can support your style of living. You have to put food on the table, pay rent, etc. All of the above career paths you have mentioned like Journalism for example can be minors in college as well. Try to find a college fair to attend, get some pamphlets , and ask the representatives about their programs you might be interested in or other options. Junior year is serious stuff, its important to be prepared, however you do not need your whole life planned out. I now want to be a Biology major w/ a business minor and a biochemistry minor, people change. Another tactic you might find useful is to get involved in a few more extra curriculars that involve art or journalism so your parents see you’re taking an initiate to improve your application for college. Also just try taking the ACT & SAT to get the best score you can get, just to prove to your parents- hey yeah, I’m successful I can do this. My parents seemed to be more understanding once I proved to them no matter what I will end up doing, I’m going to be good and give it my all. You’re not going to love any job you have in life 100%, but work isn’t supposed to be great all of the time. You will have stressful situations in any career. It’s just life and a balancing act. Best of luck to you! Sending you a virtual hug as well! I know the position you’re in.
That’s okay you still have some time to decide.
I feel the exact same way…like, I know I’m only 16 and it’s not normal to have my life planned out at this age, but it’s also so difficult to put together a cohesive college application when I have absolutely no clue what I want to do in the future and all of my awards/extracurriculars are scattered.
@glasshours, “scattered” ECs may not be the end of the world - they might see that as well rounded.
@Cocohorse Oh wow, we must be long lost twins or something. Anyways, best of luck to you! Consider yourself lucky that you’re not a junior like me lol. I’m sure we’ll find something along the way
@southernbelle16 Thank you for that! And you’re totally true about the “not loving your job 100%” thing… never really realized that. Good wake up call. Good luck on your fashion endeavor
@glasshours I totally feel you… All my ECs are scattered too. But like another poster said, maybe you could spread them all out and find a “common theme” among them? sigh Hopefully you find something! Good luck
@SippinCoffee good idea. Just a thought. One idea is to use the different ECs to show your strength in some characteristic/interest that you want to emphasize. Or find the common theme…
Ughh the sheer lack of jobs for creative thinkers… I would say dont stress if you are not sure, explore your interests dont let money or a “responsibility” to be on 6 figures stop you doing what you love. A bit of mushy mushy sentiment there… But if you actually prefer doing things like writing over solving math problems, a possible career that pays well and has good stability is a university professor. You get good money, heck of a lot of stability (Tenure!) and get to do what you love, although you will need a PHD and landing the job can be tough.
