Hi I'm currently a junior in high school and i am a year around swimmer. My best event is the 100 fly. I go a 52. (50 free=22, 100 free=49, 100 back=56) my goal is to under 50 this year in the 100 fly. Am i fast enough to swim for JHU? If you were once a year around swimmer, how did swimming help you get into the college that you wanted? Does it help at all? I am getting worried because my times don't justify the amount of time and effort i put into swimming. Should i just quit swimming and focus on academics? Please help. Anything will be helpful!

I think you are doing well and will be able to get an admissions boost at many good schools. Read through the posts in the athletic recruiting forum. It will give you a lot of help on how to go through the swim recruiting process. To start though, you should fill out the swim recruiting forms on the college websites of any schools that you may be interested in. Also, look at the conference meet results of any team you are thinking about. Aim for colleges where you could contribute points at the conference champs.

Thank you stemmmm. For Johns hopkins specifically, do you know the academic standards? I have a 4.00 gpa and 2250 SAT. Is this good enough? I actually was at Johns Hopkins for summer program in which i took two real college classes. I had access to the recreation center and swam in their pool almost everyday. I peeked at the record board and the record for 100 fly was 49. I think i can go a 49 or better this season.

Your academics are plenty high enough for a recruit - the coach will love you. Email the coach and tell them about your interest.

Thanks! I feel somewhat composed, now. Are you currently in JHU swim team?

I agree that with stemmmm to contact the coach via a recruiting form . Also recommend that you look at current team times for different events to see if your times are similar to other JHU swimmers. That can be found here. http://www.collegeswimming.com/team/111/mod/teamtimes

Thank you so much @akbknc !

@akbknc and @stemmmm Just out of curiosity, say i got accepted to JHU, 1) do i have to join the swim team? 2) can i quit swim team after my freshman year?

At a DIII school (such as JHU) where there are no scholarships tied to your swimming you can quit at any time. However, the coach only has so many recruiting spots on a team. If you go through recruiting and ask for coach support and take one of those spots, ethically, it is really bad to plan to quit. You not only hurt the JHU swim team but you hurt others from your school and high school swim team who will be less recruitable in the future. But, there is nothing wrong in my opinion with swimming and if after a year you don’t like it or find it too difficult to balance with academics, at that point making the decision not to continue. The point of D3 swimming is to be fun and increase the college experience and if the team doesn’t do that, then I think it would be ok not to swim. I cannot say enough bad things about someone’s moral character who would take a swim spot with a plan to quit as soon as admitted.
