I'm a highschool senior, and I'll be attending the Kelley school of business at Indiana University for the next four years. I plan on getting an MBA, so naturally Harvard will be one of my hopefuls.

What are some tips you can give me on how to prepare for applying. I know, 4.0 GPA is a must, but beyond that, I'm a little lost.

For business school, you usually need work experience first, in fields like ibanking, consulting (rare to find jobs in that unless you’re a Wharton grad), etc before you apply. Now, if you’re going to apply to the 2+2 program, then it helps to have strong ECs, LoR, etc. In all honesty, the 2+2 program is very competitive and GPA, ECs, etc. are just a glimmer of what you need to just get an interview.

Grisam: I didn’t realize that about work experience, but of course that makes sense. Also I didn’t know about the 2+2 program. It looks extremely competitive, but we’ll see.

DMOC: I figure an internship is probably a must, that’s something I’m looking into now. It’s really hard to tell what’s a worthwhile internship. :(

Internship is almost needed during undergrad years, and it helps to have one at big companies (which you would likely do during the summer at NYC, since not many ibanking firms/whatnot are in Indiana). Having internships in Goldman, JP Morgan Chase, etc is a huge hook but it’s worth mentioning that they are just as competitive as Harvard. Most internships at top firms usually go to Wharton/Ross/Kelley/top b-school studnets.

Firstly, you won’t be applying to Harvard in four years. More like seven or eight.

Most of the top graduate business schools usually require experience - work experience, and it is very rare that anyone, fresh out of college with a bachelor’s degree, would be able to attain a position at a top graduate business school without having done something completely out of the ordinary.

Personally, I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you. Just focus on getting internships related to your field of study starting in your sophomore year. Have fun in your freshman year.

You should know that attempting to gain acceptance to HBS straight out of UG is almost impossible. If your serious about HBS, make sure that you are doing well in school, getting the best internships you can during summers and getting a job straight out of UG.
