I'm applying ED to NYU next fall, but I also want to apply to UNC, U of Miami and Tulane EA. Is this ok? I know NYU's ED is binding, and I will be going to NYU if I get in, it's my dream school, but I figure it couldn't hurt to apply EA to a few of my other top schools that aren't binding just to get the apps done faster and get decisions back earlier. Is this ok?

I think it’s ok as long as the other schools aren’t SCEA (single choice early action).

BTW…since NYU doesn’t give good aid, are you sure that your parents will pay the $50k+ per year for you to go there? If not, why are you applying ED there?

My parents can afford it, my mom is a published author and my dad is a very successful lawyer, they know it’s my dream school and if I get in they’d be happy to pay for it.

I think you’re okay, but the second NYU accepts you, you have to withdraw all of your other applications.

Have you visited NYU? If not, please do so before you submit your application because you need to be 100% sure.

NYU allows you to apply EA elsewhere if you apply ED to it. However, you need to check the rules of the other schools to which you might apply EA because some may prohibit you from doing so, examples: (a) Yale and Stanford have EA but prohibit you from applying ED or EA elsewhere: (b) Georgetown has EA and prohibits you from applying ED elsewhere.

This is incorrect. ED is only binding upon acceptance of the financial package (both merit and need-based). That’s an important ‘out’ for both full-pay and need-based applications alike.

In this case, the O.P. appears to be a full-pay. Assuming he has the academic qualifications, NYU is likely to accept him with open arms.

The lack of significant merit and grant money to applicants is a strong indication of alumni dissatisfaction with NYU. It might be a good question to wonder why.

Isn’t Tulane SCEA?

ETA: nevermind, I checked. They’re both SCEA and EA, apparently. Weird.

ctyankee: I never thought of that, thanks I’ll look into it.

Kajon: I grew up in NYC, I spent the first 11 years of my life in Union Square. I know the city my first choice on where I want to live. I’m going to visit the actual campus in august, but unless I REALLY don’t like what I see I’ll be applying early decision.

That’s not an out for full pay students. If you don’t apply for finaid, an inadequate finaid package is not a reason for backing out of an ED agreement.
