I’m looking for some good schools in a neat area. Anywhere in the world.
My scores are: ACT 29, SAT 1320, AP world hist grade 5, ap seminar grade 4, ap psych grade 4, ap gov/po grade 4, ap chem grade 1, and I’m currently taking ap euro hist, ap research, and ap statistics.
I volunteer at Ten Thousand Villages, a non-profit organisation that sells various merchandise made by people from developing communities and all profits go back to their homes. I work at a medical clinic called EPIC Functional Medicine which is locally famous and also known around the country by a selective few, and am currently writing a novel that will be ready for publication by the end of my senior year. I’m president of gardening club and an active member of my school’s volunteer club.
WHERE would I be a good candidate? I want to go into history/social work/humanities etc, I’m socially liberal and love scenic areas. Not a huge city person, but also not a small town person either.
I have no idea where I want to go for university, so I’m asking here.
Coming from Iowa in the US, unweighted GPA 3.76, Budget is like $33k with room and board, will go up or down.
It’s so much cheaper to study outside the US with that budget. Better schools than anywhere in America for tens of thousands of dollars cheaper. But I’m absolutely willing to be flexible with my budget.
Are you female? If so, take a look at Smith and Mount Holyoke. Also look at Clark in Worcester, Mass. They have a scholarship for students involved in social initiatives.
Does Iowa have reciprocity on in-state tuition with neighboring states such as Minnesota or Wisconsin? Both of these states have very good public universities.
With that budget and that GPA you would probably be good at a number of schools in Canada such as U.Victoria, Simon Fraser (both in BC), University of Manitoba, Concordia (Montreal) or Dalhousie (Nova Scotia). There are also a few smaller schools several of which are on the east coast. I am not sure whether the universities in Ontario would fit your budget or not, it might be worth taking a look at a few.
University of San Diego. Great location in city (but not really urban feeling), in view of the ocean. I think you would get decent merit with your stats and probably not a lot of Iowans applying. Princeton Review’s number one most beautiful US campus. (D is starting there today.)
She also looked at U of Iowa and it was a runner up. Lucky you with such great instate tuition! Pretty school, too!
You sounds like you would enjoy the Praxis Labs in the Honors College at U of Utah. https://honors.utah.edu/2018-2019-praxis-labs/ Amazing combination of city access (and a city with some great progressive social programs going on, particularly vis-a-vis homelessness) and natural beauty + outdoor recreation. There are merit scholarships and there’s a path to residency after the first year, dropping the cost to well within your budget. The U is quite socially liberal (HuffPo rated it among the top 25 LGBT-friendly U’s, for example) although not as racially/ethnically diverse as many other flagships.
Agree re: Canadian U’s - esp. Dalhousie and UBC.
Maybe St. Andrews?
UNC Asheville could be a nice safety. Public LAC in a gorgeous small city, socially liberal, in the Blue Ridge mountains. Right around your price point even before merit.
