I'm at CC, would I be able to transfer to UC/CSU?

Hello,

This is my situation;

Im planning to apply for a CSU or UC for next Fall (2015). I'm looking at UCSC, CSULB, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and SJSU at the moment.

I have 37.5 units but 7.5 units are NON-Assisted courses (English Remedial Classes) :/ i was doing the UC admission planner online and I added most of the classes even with the D that I got in Music during the spring (can't file Academic Renewal) and only get an overall GPA of 2.96, but UC's require at least 3.0 and that D won't even be transferrable? Do non-assist units count? I'm planning on taking 15 units this fall, and 15 units next spring. Please look at my course work and see if i will be eligible to apply so i can transfer for Fall 2015.

Coursework Summary

GPA: Units(Sem/Qtr):
ASSIST Certified Courses: 1 2.79 43.00/ 64.50
Non-ASSIST Certified Courses: 3.57 7.50/ 11.25
Overall: 2.96 50.50/ 75.75

bump

The “3.0 GPA” standard applies to only incoming freshmans. Junior level transfers (which you’re currently doing) has a 2.4 GPA minimum requirement. As long as you complete your 60 units by spring 2015 you’ll be fine. Non-Assist units are non transferable and won’t be counted in your 60 unit requirement. they just like seeing what you’ve taken even if it doesn’t count. Hope this helps!!

@Lovanh‌ let’s say with the planned courses I’m taking this fall my assist courses is only 43 units + 15 (spring 2015). What can I do about those 2 units? Do I have to take 17 one semester to be eligible to transfer?

You must, no matter what, have 60 transferable units completed by the end of Spring 2015. There are some areas schools are a little flexible with- the 60 units is NOT an area of flexibility.

So whatever you need to do to take enough units in the fall and spring, do it. Otherwise if you’re accepted, they’ll rescind your offer if you don’t have the units. And no, you can’t take them the summer before transferring.

UC’s require a language other than English. In high school I took four years of Spanish and took the necessary IB exams and passed them. May I be able to get proof of that and show my school and get 3 additional units so I can put under the UC Tap application to apply to UCSC? I read that some colleges must have completed at least 30 UC-transferable semester units (excluding AP/IB/A-Level units) prior to TAG submission, but it doesn’t say anything about UCSC excluding it either and I could not find it on their website.

Does your CC offer credit by examination? That way you could get the units you need quickly. The downside is that you have to pay for the class even if you don’t pass. Another option is an easy online class somewhere to put you over 60 units. Does your CC have a Winter session?

I think you do have to have 30 units for TAG, but you can apply without TAG with less so long as you complete 60 by the end of the Spring.

@luckie1367 My CC does offer credit by examination. But what courses would I be getting tested on? For tag, do they require GPA minimum require of 3.2 (for example, Davis) at the time your apply or by the end of Fall 2014/ Spring of 2015?

I’d say any course that you feel comfortable enough to pass.

For UC Davis TAG (from: <a href=“TAG Frequently Asked Questions”>https://tag.ucdavis.edu/students/faq.cfm</a> )

The minimum overall UC-transferable GPA minimums for majors in each college are:

College of Agricultural an Environmental Sciences: 3.20

College of Biological Sciences: 3.20

College of Engineering: 3.30

College of Letters and Science: 3.20

@luckie1367‌ Do I need to have the 3.20 at the time I apply or can I get that by the end of this fall? Because as you can see I only have a 2.96. :/

From the same website:

"What are the requirements to submit a fall 2015 UC Davis TAG?

Fall 2015 minimum requirements for a TAG must be completed by the end of summer 2014, one year prior to your planned fall 2015 enrollment at UC Davis:

30 UC-transferable semester (45 quarter) units

3.20-3.30 overall GPA (dependent upon major)

meet UC Davis selective major course group GPA requirements for courses completed at the time the TAG is submitted.

The UC Davis TAG requires you to self-report:

a complete academic history of each college or university where you were previously or are currently enrolled or attended

test scores from Advanced Placement (AP) and/or International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level Examinations

a plan that demonstrates how you will fulfill UC transfer admission requirements in the areas of English (two courses) and mathematics (one course) by the end of fall term 2014, one year prior to your planned fall enrollment.

a plan that demonstrates how you will fulfill junior-level class standing with 60 UC transferable units completed by the end of spring term prior to fall enrollment

a plan that demonstrates how you will fulfill UC Davis selective major requirements by the end of spring term prior to fall enrollment

See your California community college counselor for additional requirements that may apply. "

@luckie1367‌ Thank you so much! Unfortunately, I won’t be eligible for TAG for UC Davis with a 2.96, let alone be able to apply for TAG for any UC, I think UCSC is 3.0. :(

You might me ineligible for TAG, but if you bring up your GPA during the Fall semester, you could still be competitive for regular admission! Don’t give up hope!

Thank you so much! I appreciate it. :)
