I'm being forced to move and it's too late to petition for a withdrawal on my classes

I am enrolled in community college and I live with my parents due to financial issues. We’re being forced out of our house of 15 years and we are buying a house that is 2 hours away from my school. I obviously can’t commit to making that commute 5 days a week due to gas prices and no one in my family would have a reason to come back to the city. So, I’m thinking about 2 other colleges that would be close to me, to enroll into.

My problem is, I’d be moving in the middle of semester. Would I be able to pick up exactly where I left off or would I have to completely start over?

I feel like this is something you should be asking the colleges directly. Before the move I would talk to the advising office at your current school. Have in mind the places you are considering transferring to so they could possibly give you a more definite answer. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that you might have to start over. But then again you might not. I think you should talk to a college official! Good luck!

I don’t have any experience of this, but I think you must go to your advisor and the Dean ASAP and see if there is some kind of withdrawal process due to exceptional circumstances. It is not reasonable for you to drive four hours a day. Go right away and ask for advice. That is what they are there for. Good luck.

Is there someone you can stay with (friend, another family you know) in the current town for a couple of months ? That way you could at least finish out the semester in your current community college and earn those credits.

Which state do you live in? I believe in Texas, it is a law with colleges that if you have extenuating circumstances that creates hardships on the student (such as a student’s work schedule changing beyond their control, a family death, etc.) that you are permitted to take a late withdrawal. If you’re not in Texas, you will need to discuss with the registrar if there is such an option, but definitely as others have suggested, talking with the dean of student affairs would be a very nice option since he/she will have lots of administrative pull to listen to your situation.

You have two choices:

  1. Try to find someone to stay with the rest of the semester (friend, family, or find a situation where you can help with chores in exchange for room.)
  2. Withdraw

I would immediately go to my dean of students or similar and talk about your situation.
Colleges are not set up to let you continue Psych 101 at another college if you switch half way through.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you just quit with not doing anything…then you will get F’s on your transcript that will follow you where ever you go next.
