Great ACT score…have you taken SAT II’s…becasue JHU and WashU really recommend them…if not then take them in Jan and call them to see if they will take them…i recommend you take bio and chem if your gonna major in that area…

Thanks Dore…! That’s really good to know, I was under the impression that they were important, but was unable to make it on any of the test dates. Will no subject tests be a strike against me?
CHANCES^

I wouldn’t worry about the class rank thing. My best friend is ranked 10/66, and he got into Carnegie Mellon ED. Everything sounds like a match. Only Tufts and Wash. at St. Louis might be low reaches.

Really? Thanks, Casey-of-hearts! That’s encouraging. I know Wash U is probably the hardest one on my list, but I thought Johns Hopkins and Rice would be harder than Tufts?

I think JHU and Rice are much harder than Tufts, but I really think the Subject Tests will be a bad mark on your app becasue they do recommend them and it really helps if you have good scores on them. If your good in bio then 2-3 weeks of prep can definitely get you a nice score above 700.

Thanks Dore. I’m sure I could study a couple weeks and do very well on the Chem and Bio tests considering I got a 36 on my first ACT science and a 35 on the one above. Will no subject tests hurt me at JHU and Rice as much as Tufts, or does Tufts just emphasize them?

^…that makes no sense at all.
The ACT science section tests how well you analyze graphs, it has nothing to do with having knowledge of science at all.

Chem and bio test specific science knowledge…

You may have a good point, shiomi. The ACT science section is a joke, but nevertheless I’m confident in my scientific abilities because I got an A in Honors Chem and Bio. I am unable to make the January SAT II’s so I will rule out those.
PLEASE JUST CHANCE ME^^^

Lack of SAT IIs aside, ECs are okay, and ACT and GPA/rank aren’t bad, so…

-Johns Hopkins: Match
-Rice: Low Match/Sight reach
-Tufts: Slight reach
-Carleton: Match, although I’m not too familiar with liberal arts colleges
-Washington U: Reach
-Boston College: Low reach/Match
-U of Minnesota Honors: In to regular, match for honors

But yeah, like everyone’s said, SAT IIs will really help your chances to pretty much all of these.

Thanks a lot for the actual chancing disasterpiece02! I have not taken SAT II’s and will not so everyone please judge accordingly. Johns Hopkins-Match? Really? That’s my dream school. More input please.

Basically I noticed that your ACT score was at about the top 50% (middle is 28-33) GPA/rank are both good (don’t worry too much about a small school) From the looks of it, you made good use of the curriculum your HS offered, only two APs offered and you took them both, while the rest of your courses look decently rigorous (unless your school’s a complete joke :p) and the ECs are decent enough while not being too weak. That said, I determined that you have a good shot at JHU.

Thanks again disaster…! That seems like a fair analysis, at least I would like to believe. I took by far the hardest schedule my school has and added to what was offered so I hope that is noticed, but it did hurt my GPA and rank a bit since we don’t weight.
ANYONE ELSE CHANCES???

I would completely disagree with that analysis. You are top 20% at a school where the vast majority are top 10%. I don’t have a clue what your real chances are at JHU, I just know, as I said before, kids are posting here who don’t have a clue either.

Thanks for the honesty hmom5. The top 9 students in my class haven’t taken AP, Honors, or even foreign languages but have their 3.95’s or w/e. It’s not really doing me any favors, especially when rank is out of 55 or so.

I think highly competitive schools would still expect that kind of GPA from you in your honors and APs, especially since your school does not sound very competitive. That said, it’s a mystery to me how colleges handle a competitive school that does not weigh.

That is a very valid point hmom5! My lower grades are in religion classes, choir, and phy. ed; do you think colleges will throw out these grades and reevaluate my GPA? I have straight A’s in my AP’s, Honors, and College classes.
