Yes, I think most recalculate GPA to just include academic classes. Yet for their stats they seem hell bent on getting kids in the top 10% so it’s a mystery to me how they really look at a case like yours.

I personally think a school like mine shouldn’t rank if they aren’t going to weigh classes, but I work with what I got and hope that class rank, being only one part of my application, is overlooked since my GPA is above average at JHU and some of the other schools and my ACT reinforces my GPA.
Any more chances?

I agree and it’s pretty shocking coming from a private school. At the privates my kids attended parents would never had let that continue. Your school sounds pretty unusual, a private where the top 10 took no honors or APs is unheard of in my neck of the woods.

Parents have complained in prior years but no change has occurred. The grading is heavy at my school in most classes as 35 kids in my class of 55 or so have less than a 3.0 and the top 10 at my school will be attending small Christian colleges and local universities because they merely are bookworms without substantial aptitudes. My counselor wrote an amazing rec letter explaining these conditions and how I am perhaps the top student the school has seen and have taken much more difficult classes (including 3 languages at a time), will this void my weak rank?

Honestly, who knows? Is your school private or parochial? If it’s private, have your parents write a letter telling them this situation is hurting top students. If it’s parochial it’s hard to fight the system.

Parochial; my parents tried in vain. But thanks so much for your input and advice. I hope for future students my school resolves this issue.

-Johns Hopkins: high match
-Rice: low reach
-Tufts: slight reach
-Carleton: reach
-Washington U: high match (your scores and GPA are good enough, plus your curriculum)
-Boston College: match/slight reach
-U of Minnesota Honors: probably in to honors/definitely in to regular

Your curriculum will outshine your rank. You took the hardest courses available which will look better than taking easy classes and coasting.

Thanks a lot almosc90! I was nervous about that rank, so hearing your input on my course selection is very encouraging. I wanted to hear that exact thing from someone.
So will I get into one of the first 5 listed? Any more chances??

i think u have a really good shot, some leadership positions would help though, jhu is still kind of a reach!
