I'm bored! Chance me?

So I'm just kind of bored and want to hear the insight you all have (I.E Yale, Duke and Vanderbilt are reaches and etc.).

List: Duke, Vanderbilt, UVa, Indiana at Bloomington (accepted with a large scholarship of around $70000), Washington and Lee, Richmond, Yale, Boston College, William and Mary, and Virginia Tech

GRADES
-GPA: 94.4/100 or 3.90 GPA (no weighted classes in my school. Good news is I can send in whichever of the two I want, and the 94.4 looks better)
-Rank: unranked/130 (I'm up there, though, probably around 15th)
-SAT: math-740, reading-730, writing-680
-SAT II: Math II 740 and US History 690 (not great but I was too lazy to do them more than once)
-ACT (won't be turning this in): composite- 30, math-34, reading-32, English-32, science-23 (passed out for half of it, sooooooooo tired), English/writing-31
-AP: Calc BC- 5, US History- 5, World History- 4, European History- 5, Physics C- 2 (lol whoops)
-College credit (college level classes I've taken. Our school doesn't have AP but you could consider every class except the ones in math and science, which do have advanced vs. not advanced classes, AP level): BC Calc, Physics, Advanced Biology, Modern European History, and Economics

ACTIVITIES
-4 year golfer at school (captain) and for a local club (won an award for player of the year in golf and academics; also volunteer for the program still)
-Algebra (main course), Spanish, and Gardening (Spanish and Gardening were my two electives) Teacher and Volunteer for Breakthrough Collaborative (logged over 280 hours in the 6 week program and have gone to a lot of associated events)
-Tutor (both inside and outside of school)
-IRC/Debate
-Model UN (won best delegate from our school)
-Youth Group leader
-Environmental/Garden Club
-Intern at a State Senator's office (recommendation from their office was really good)
-Job at a golf course

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Maths instructor wrote a spectacular one, English instructor wrote a great one too, last one (US History, written for an application for a full ride back in October) was kinda rushed, so okay.

Cover letter by my college counselor was top notch. He's my golf coach and he and I have a really good relationship.

ESSAYS
Common App: Wrote about a place where I feel at home. Discussed my love of being in the classroom and the heavy contrast between listening as a student and working as a teacher (and how I still felt at home as a teacher).

Supplements: They've been great so far! I've been extremely creative with each one.

MAJOR
I plan to major in Finance or Economics, Politics, and History (depends on whether I'm attending a liberal arts school or not)

I don't have a hook or anything but I guess I should say I am a Caucasian male and I go to a private school in the state of Virginia (why I'm applying to so many VA colleges).

I guess I should add I’ll chance back… That’ll probably get one response hopefully haha.

I’ll do it since you chanced me. Disclaimer: I obviously don’t work in admissions, so I could be right on the money, or I could be totally off. Who knows?

-Duke: Reach

-Vanderbilt: Reach, though it could be low reach, especially since you know someone who works there.

-UVa: Safety, especially since you live in VA.

-Washington and Lee: Match

-Richmond: Low match, maybe safety

-Yale: Reach for anyone and everyone. No one can say it’s a match or safety.

-Boston College: Low match

-William and Mary: Low match

-Virginia Tech- Safety

We are very alike. I’m getting the vibe that you’re really smart without trying too hard, but you’re not a genius. I feel I’m the same way about myself. As far as your schools go…

Vandy and Duke are low to mid reaches. Yale is a high reach.

Everything else is at worst a match.

arrozconleche- Yeah I have legacy (which is a big deal there) at Richmond so I kind of hope it’s a safety. Thanks! I hope you’re right!

Immasenior- Yep. Me in a nutshell haha. I’ve never really been the try hard brainy kid. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I had really applied myself (not procrastinated in most classes I’ve taken) to my full abilities. I like to think that if I had spent as much time as some of my friends (like the valedictorian) studying I could have been in a position a lot better than the one I’m in now. Oh well, though!

I’m not saying it will count for anything, but I think the difference that sets me apart from those other applicants that have 2300s and 5.0s is that I’d work twice as hard as any of them to prove that I was worth admitting, because I want to be that kid that a college takes a chance on and a student that ends up going above and beyond all expectations.

I’m not a genius, no, but I’m not by any means incapable of going to one of those reach schools (and neither are you! You could easily do it!), and I really want the chance to prove that to at least one of those universities.

Maybe I’m just dreaming. I’ll probably get rejected like 19 out of 20 Yale applicants, but at least I can say I tried to prove myself wrong. That, to me, makes this whole process worth it.

That’s a nice sentiment, but I’d prefer an acceptance letter all the same xD

@arswan14 Wow. That’s sort of an inspiring speech there. I share that same mentality with the schools I want to go to as well. I know Rice is a reach, but I’m hoping that I’m picked over a student with better grades and that my wish to go to the school really shows.

@immasenior Lol. I want the same thing. An acceptance letter.

Good luck to both of you!

Hahaha of course I want an acceptance letter too! And thanks, arroz, I try haha! I think it’s the way most people feel; however, I don’t think it really matters because at the end of the day colleges prefer stats over potential.

PS- You have a solid chance at Rice! I really think you do! Let me know how it goes.

Thanks! I’m really encouraged by the optimism. I’m hoping all goes well for everyone. Even if I don’t get in, I know I have my safeties, so I’d be okay. I’d be disappointed, though.

How does this bump thing work?

By posting frequently, you bump up the post in the “Chances” forum. That’s what bump is.

arroz- Ah I see haha. Makes sense.

I just got a very generous letter of recommendation from my boss… The Senator… 0.0

Good list of schools with Yale and Duke being the hardest to get into. Might add a school like Holy Cross-top25 LAC with Jan15th application due date.

par72- I like the golf reference for a name haha. Thanks for the insight! I’ll look into Holy Cross!

Thanks for chancing me!

Duke: Low Reach
Washington and Lee: Match
Yale: Reach (Its a reach for everyone)
Boston College (High Match/Low Reach)
William and Mary:Low Match/Match

No problem man! You think BC will be a reach? I’m above their SAT mid 50 and their average GPA. I mean I guess it’s always possible because it’s private…

Duke and Yale are reaches as they are for everyone, but all the other colleges should be attainable with your application

All schools are low match-safety except

Duke: Reach

Vanderbilt: Low Reach

Yale: Reach (but then again it is Yale)

Chance me back please  http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1595631-chance-me-please.html

I’m contemplating taking the SAT again to bring up my writing. Good or bad idea?

I think all those schools are indeed low match besides Duke, Vandy and Yale. But I think that maybe you should bring your writing up. That can’t be a bad idea
