I'm bored so... Ask a UCF student

That would be me. I'll try and keep track of this thread and reply as fast as I can.

Let first start by saying I'm currently a Freshman living on campus.
I've been accepted to UF, UCF, FSU, Stetson, and NYU but I decided on UCF for financial reasons. My current major is Physics with Pre-Med classes also.

Ask me anything about UCF and I'll try to give you my best answer. It can range from admissions, to parking, tips, classes, the party and alcohol scene, clubs, all the way to the best time to look at ladies at the pool :)

Thanks for starting this thread

My DS will be at UCF this Fall and I am looking at flights home for Thanksgiving. I see that the calendar shows Thursday(11/25) and Friday(11/26) as holidays. My question is do classes end on Tuesday or Wednesday before Thanksgiving?

Were there 4/4 vacancies in the Towers when you got there in the Fall or did you hear about that? I’m a incoming transfer so I’m on the standby list and we get last dibs.

Im applied for transfer to UCF, and im from Jersey, so traveling would only be possible during christmas break. So would do the dorms stay open during the breaks? or do they close and require you to pay extra money to stay in some other room?

Did you have a meal plan? If so, was the meal plan worth it? If not, what made you decide not to? How did you live without one (e.g. a kitchen)? And if not, what have any of your friends who have a meal plan said about it?

I’ll just help out for now since I’m not really doing anything :stuck_out_tongue: Oscarcollege, the Towers apartments are open for you throughout all breaks since its a one year lease, every other dorm, however, you must leave for christmas break and i THINK spring break. You can stay over christmas break but you would have to pay extra, i THINK the same holds true for spring break but im not sure.

Hondu, classes end the wednesday right before thanksgiving. some professors (a good number of them) are generally nice and cancel wednesday classes but not all of them. It just depends on the professor.

Have you met anyone applying to the nursing program? Any difficulty in getting the prerequisite classes? Any rumors about favoritism towards UCF undergrads, or is it wide open? Is it true they get more than 6 applicants for each spot?

My daughter lives in a 4/4 in the Towers. Her freshman year, the name of her roommates changed 3 times before move in for Fall. In other words, people change their minds all the time and the 4/4 apts in Towers are expensive ($3500 a semester) so many kids change their mind. You should be able to get one if you really want one. Towers agreements start in Fall, so unless someone is keeping the same room from the previous year, everyone starts fresh in Fall.

My daughter is staying in the same room next Fall, she has a great situation (her own private bathroom, a full size bed, and near classes). She originally was going to move off campus for her Junior year but it fell through. I am thrilled that she is staying in Towers.

Classes do officially meet on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving but as Marlins said, many professors will choose to cancel that day. The Towers are open during all the breaks.

Appreciate the info on Wednesday classes before Thanksgiving. But since there is no guarantee about classes not being held that day, I will be looking at scheduling a flight home no earlier than 6pm. Still got maybe a month before AirTran puts the schedule online. Thanksgiving being very busy, the cheaper seats will go fast.

What professor should i pick for physics with calculus 2, statistics, and other upper level maths.

How does the university accommodate graduate students, and do they enjoy the university?

How long does it take to find a parking spot? I’ve heard anything from 15 min to 45 min.

How bad is their library? I hear its pretty old and not in a good ‘antique’ way, which makes me a bit sad considering that’s where I’ll be spending a lot of my time.

If you are able to pick your professors (meaning that there are multiple class times with available spots for you) then you need to go to the website: ratemyprofessors.com and look up each one that is teaching the class that semester. Take all rating with a grain of salt but my daughter has found a lot of wisdom on that website.

Isn’t FSU cheaper than UCF?

How is dorm life?
Where would you suggest going to meet new people?
Where most of the females located?

What numbers should I pick for the lottery tonight?

4 8 15 16 23 42

Thank you. I’m short a couple of million bucks this week and could use the money.

*Okay sorry guys. I don’t have access to a computer on Friday and Saturday but I am here now. *

** My DS will be at UCF this Fall and I am looking at flights home for Thanksgiving. I see that the calendar shows Thursday(11/25) and Friday(11/26) as holidays. My question is do classes end on Tuesday or Wednesday before Thanksgiving? **

From my experience class has been on Tuesdays. On Wednesdays I would check in with their professor to see if they will have class that day, or if it is okay to miss it. Personally for me I had Calculus and Physics on Wednesday and they only reviewed what we did earlier because they knew not many people would make it.

** Were there 4/4 vacancies in the Towers when you got there in the Fall or did you hear about that? I’m a incoming transfer so I’m on the standby list and we get last dibs. **

I personally can’t speak on this on the sole reason I have no idea. I would e-mail them and find out, but be patient because UCF likes to be slow sometimes regarding e-mail replies. I would check some off-campus housing just as back up because I know Towers are very very expensive. (From my experience Pegasus Pointe and Landing are BIG no-nos.

** Im applied for transfer to UCF, and im from Jersey, so traveling would only be possible during christmas break. So would do the dorms stay open during the breaks? or do they close and require you to pay extra money to stay in some other room? **

They are closed during Christmas break and from my knowledge if you want to stay over break it will cost 525 dollars. This is Academic Village prices as I don’t know if the other dorms charge more or less.

** Did you have a meal plan? If so, was the meal plan worth it? If not, what made you decide not to? How did you live without one (e.g. a kitchen)? And if not, what have any of your friends who have a meal plan said about it? **

Nope. With a meal plan I always felt obligated to go eat a certain time per week. Sometimes on Friday I treat myself to their breakfast because I personally enjoy it. Without a meal plan each meal will be… 8-10 dollars. My roommate got a meal plan and he liked food the first semester, but during this semester he seems to complain time to time about the food becoming sub par. Let’s see… personally, and this is bad I know, I had to eat a lot of fast food without a meal plan. I stick to the lowest calorie foods when I can and drink vitamin water a lot. Sometimes I have home cooked meals at a friends house and definitely during the weekends when I am.

More coming

** Have you met anyone applying to the nursing program? Any difficulty in getting the prerequisite classes? Any rumors about favoritism towards UCF undergrads, or is it wide open? Is it true they get more than 6 applicants for each spot? **

I haven’t met anyone yet. I generally only talk to Engineering Majors/More Math based Majors. My apologies. Prerequisite classes seem decently hard for me to get into, mainly Chemistry. During registration days you really have to be quick as it’s really cutthroat to get into a class with a good professor. I had to check myucf basically daily to see if classes opened up. I haven’t heard any rumors regarding favoritism towards UCF undergrads so I can’t comment on this. 6 applicants? I would say more than 3 or 4 per spot. Don’t quote me on that though as it’s just an estimate.

I haven’t taken Statistics. For Calc II it depends how much you want to work. Although when you first register for classes at UCF they say not to check Rate My Professor… I’ve found it extremely helpful in choosing the “right” professor. I don’t want to call out any names for Calc II, but I heard Martin(something) and Reid are given great feedback.

I can’t speak for Grad students as I am an undergrad. I’m sorry :(

I have parking at the Academic Village and I have NEVER had a problem with parking. Sometimes I would go off and come back an hour later and park in the same spot I left in. There always seems to be one open spot in the AV. The parking garages on the other hand are fierce and yes it can take that long to find a spot. My advice is to talk to people leaving and offer them a ride to their car. I’ve done that a few times and I’ve also gotten some rides too. If you’re too shy/nervous about that just general circling around the parking garage is the best thing you can do. B and… A are generally the most crowded I believe. Also drive slow, people can be crazy in there.

I have barely been to the library as most of the information I need can be found on my computer. You can also access UCF’s archives from your personal computer. The library is kind of “old” in a bad way as it does seem a little unkempt from the times I have been there. There’s also a place to buy coffee if you were wondering but it’s not as good as the Barnes and Noble coffee. Computers can generally be hard to find as people are generally on it on Facebook or something. The library does leave a lot to be desired in my opinion.

** Isn’t FSU cheaper than UCF?

How is dorm life?
Where would you suggest going to meet new people?
Where most of the females located? **

I don’t know is it? They should be roughly the same price. I didn’t mean to sound arrogant there. You should be able to find that online though. Try college board’s website

Speaking for the Academic Village and people at Nike, it’s been pretty good. Events are generally always happening. Dorm life is fine but can easily be ruined by a bad roommate or suitemate. I would always get that fixed asap if you have any doubts with your RA. I’ve enjoyed being at the Academic Village and I would stay another year here if I applied on time (but alas I forgot).

Meeting new people? During the first week UCF has the “Pegasuspalooza” where they have a full list of events for meeting new people and getting general information. I would try some of the “parties” they host during the week and especially the day where all the clubs are presented to you. Get as much information and go! I wouldn’t really use classes as a way of getting friends but you can. From my experience (mainly in my Math and Physics classes) people are usually more focused on learning.

The real question is where aren’t the females lol… (The engineering building most likely). Seriously, I would just wander around and you’re bound to run into many ladies. They seem to focus near the gym/pool and the fountain though.

** What numbers should I pick for the lottery tonight? **

The lottery is a tax on people bad at math. Don’t do it :)

for orientaition if your staying over june 2-3 wat day do you need to get there. the 2nd or the 1st?
